The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Its heartbreaking to lose them to Predators. Finding a pile of feathers is mortifying, turns your stomach for a long time. :hugs

But it is nice to know he left behind some of his offspring. I am sure Cruella will go through a mourning period, they feel loss too. 💔

Again, my condolences, its not easy to recover from these kinds of losses. :hugs

Thank you once again :hugs . Yes, our birds feel these losses as deeply, if not more, as well

The serama trouble seems to be never ending...

Since yesterday I can't find one of Foureira's chicks. They've not been taken out since before the fox incident, not open doors or any holes to get out through, and no sign of extra feathers or anything, that would indicate it being taken as prey. I think it's Fern that is missing. They looked a lot alike, but you could tell them apart. One had a black dot on its head, and the other a light brown stripe that went all the way down to its shoulders. With age it became even more difficult to tell them apart.

For what it's worth, the remaining chick seems to be male, so I guess the Lady Gaga line won't be ending just yet. I mean, there's still Ubon, but Ubon isn't a pure serama

I’m so sorry, Fluffy. 😞 Hugs. I’m HOPING that you found tiny Fern since your last message. If she is gone, I know for certain that Lady Gaga’s remaining “tiny legacy” (Fig) is safe. I feel sad for Foureira’s loss. I am also wondering how Cruella and the others are doing since the loss of Lady Gaga and the pullet.

Foureira seems OK, although I'm sure she was stressed for some time. She's started roosting on the roost bat with Fig, so she's getting closer to letting him go now

The others seem good. They are obviously shaken up, but it's OK. They never knew Fern, so that didn't stress them out much, if at all. Ursula has decided that she'll mother Ubon from a distance, while Ocean has taken the primary role. Ursula roosts up high on the tree branches every night (they have a big olive tree in their pen), and while Ocean has also tried enticing Ubon to roost, it has not worked out, as of last night. They sleep in thr nest for now

I am so sorry Fluffy, :hugs :( sometimes finding a pile of feathers or even a body is easier than being unable to find them at all. The wonder of where they got to can be just as haunting. More hugs :hugs

I’m glad that Foureira and Fig are getting passed Fern’s absence. That pretty girl is going to raise many more sweet chicks. ❤️ Figs future is even more important now, and (s)he doesn’t even know it!

It sounds like Ursula is totally over it. It’s great that Ocean wants all the responsibility. ☺️ Eventually, Ubon’s going to want to roost with Ocean and the others. I imagine the nest is still the greatest comfort for now.

The flock dynamics sadly have changed since Lady Gaga, the pullet, and Fern passed. But, now it’ll be comforting to watch them grow and continue in Lady Gaga’s place. ❤️

Thank you both :hugs .

Indeed, WoDia. The group dynamics have definitely changed. The serama group was the closest thing I got to a tribe. Now both the birds and I will have to restart. The Tsouloufati hen/pullet (I'm assuming that's who you mean) wasn't in with the mix breed bantams, similarly to how Fig and Fern haven't really seen the whole tribe. In a way, it's good that the others didn't have to lose even more members; losing their devoted rooster was hard enough. It'll be interesting to see what ends up happening. For now Ursula still holds the title of head hen; we'll see if she would give it up in the future, though I doubt it

Ursula will surely continue to keep the flock in line. Once the new pecking order is firmly established, it will be good again. Then you can focus on expanding with more beautiful chicks eventually, and Lady Gaga’s legacy will live on. I think we all look forward to seeing tiny Fig grow into a beautiful adult. Foureira has proven herself as a terrific broody! 🥰 You’ll eventually get to a point where you’ll have more broody girls than you’ll even know what to do with!
