The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I've never posted in this thread, but the neighbors dog found a 5-6 week old chick. I think its a welsummer , but it might be a brown leghorn. What do you guys think?

I have two chicks that look like that. They are suppose to be Welsummers but they do not look like the others so after another month I will decide if thye need to be culled. It is a good idea to have a bunch and then only raise the best from them. Right ?

I think it could be. I have some that looked very similar a 6-7 weeks. I would wait for another opinion though, as I'm not sure about the quality of my Welsummers just yet.

Alright guys, I've been scanning through this thread searching for a breeder with some really nice birds that stick closely to the APA standard that I could either buy some chicks off of or if they only ship eggs, I could go that route as well. However, I haven't had to much luck narrowing down such a person, but with so many posts I'm quite positive I've just looked over them. My fiance' and I are starting up a little flock consisting of Welsummers, Barnevelders, and Australorps (already have these guys), but we only want to get birds from a really nice line, as he's interested in showing and we're planning on breeding on a very small scale if we get nice enough birds. Anyone have someone in mind that I could contact for some really nice stock, or at least the potential for it

Definite maybe. It is a Partridge colored pullet. Conformation is correct for a Wellie. Unfortunately the Partridge variety is available in a lot of breeds and this body style is similar to most dual purpose and heritage breeds. If you get a dark brown egg then it probably is a Wellie, though it would still be possible that it was a Partridge Penedesenca. However, in my experience Penedesenca pullets have a sort of wild eye marking on their down instead of the clean line that you pullet has which is typical of a Wellie.

Oh, a good portion of us on the thread are from Washington and Oregon. Opposite side of the country. I know Bargain (Nancy), down in Georgia, has some good stock and sells eggs through the listings on this site. I just received some Lavendar Orp eggs from her a couple of hours ago.
