The Welsummer Thread!!!!

And to answer your question, I got her at my local feed store. I was super excited when I saw that they had Wellies because I think they're beautiful, and I feel like I really lucked out with her. She's got really vivid colors!! Sorry about the comb/wattle pics....she did NOT like the camera being close to her, lol!

Adding to what aart had to say, chickens are definitely flock animals and they will exhibit stress if alone (no other chickens). Periods of stress can cause a laying chicken to stop laying. Wellies do take longer to lay than a typical production bird from what I've read - I have 2 that are 23 weeks and I'm waiting on eggs too. But, get that girl some friends and see if you can improve your defenses. Maybe post here on BYC with what kind of predator it was for some ideas of how to do that if you need help. Good luck!

Anyone got any young laying or about to lay Welsummers anywhere near Alabama?

Probably. I'm assuming your welsummers were hatched in April? I got some in April a year and a half ago and mine didn't start laying until they were over eight months' old, when the days started lengthening again. They were my oldest starters. Well, I do have mille fleuee d'uccles that could break that record if they don't start laying really soon.
Have their combs gotten redder? Are they squatting? Perhaps they will start soon.

These are my 2 roos. They both were born this spring but at different times. I Just cannot wait to use one this next spring. I can only have 1 so we will see how they do with crowing and filling out for now.

Charlie is this roo's name and he is the oldest.

Chuck is this roo's name the younger one.

Chuck is below as well

The chickens have waited all summer to get to go into the garden and they only have about a 3 weeks left before they go into their winter greenhouse for the next 5-6 months. That just sounded depressing. LOL

Maybe you guys can help me. I have three that are 16 weeks now. One I know is an EE and a Roo but the other two I don't know what the breed or sex is. Here is a pic of one. Any ideas?
