There is a marked difference in colouring between Chick-let and the other 2; she seems much darker. Does this indicate anything? They are almost twice the size now than they were when we got them at 2 days...

Bossy-boots doesn't hold her tail as high; again does this mean anything?

Well, it is Friday again, so here are week 3 pictures of the ladies...

They are starting to get that scruffy look...

Hi everyone. My one Welsummer chick is one of my favorites! She is sooo darn cute! I do think she's a bit small though. Can someone tell me if that's normal? She is almost 1/2 the size of the NH Reds I got at the same time. The GLW I got at the same time is a bit bigger than her.She is tiny to me! Here is a pic...

And another...next to the GLW. I tried to get good pics of her but she's always underneath someone!!

The previous post regarding small differences has me curious. What I think is that every creature has small differences. Think about human twins, even identical twins sometimes have very slight different markers or lower ears or something, and they came from the same eggs. So chickens which all come from a different egg would have differences. Well anyway that is my reasoning and I also think, "Hey just enjoy the little critters." Please understand that this comment is meant to be friendly.

amyrains One thing about your rooster, I like his comb and colors. I am not up to par on the body form but that looks good to me also and I would have no doubts about breeding your birds. But like I said I am a beginner especially with Welsummers. So far I am just looking for pretty eggs. Oh BTW, folks who are striving for high quality flocks do some times use the term, "make" to describe the process of breeding and culling out.

Yep too hot in most of the country to ship and that has me worried as I have babies that are suppose to be coming from Florida anyday. They should have arrived earlier than now but it just wasn't possible. I had a horrible nightmare about it the night before last. Biting nails and pulling out my hair until they get here.

They are normally "continental", but in this case I would say large fancy?

One book that I have says "Standard American" and the other book I have says "Continental"

I was going to answer Continental as well until I started flipping through my books and was left confused, but I agree with Happymtn on the large fancy in this case since that is one of the 2 options they give you. Hope your son has a great time!

Maybe Lensters will stop by and give his opinion.

Happy 4th Everyone!!!!!!

Grandma~

They are almost at my favorite age......I just adore them after the freaked out teen stage when their little personalities start to shine. Thanks again for taking the time to post and share them. They are great!

Welsummers are Continental, and I would put them under large fancy. Welsummers are not bad layers(150 - 250 per year, but I would say that 150-200 is more the range - depending on if you have them lay in the winter, I personally have all of my birds stop laying in the winter, so they can use their food souces and energy to focus on making it thru the winter instead of worrying about laying eggs...)
