The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I'm wondering if all this heat in the south could be affecting hatch rates. My broodies just finished up 2 different clutches with the poorest hatch rate ever for them. I sent out as bunch of wellie eggs for a swap, and I'm kinda worried they might have gotten cooked while I was saving them up.

I never seem to find out how the eggs did though- I think I'm done with that!

Here is a picture of the 2 eggs that hatched from the 4 eggs that HappyMtn sent to us. They are about 8 weeks old now and hang out with 2 Ameraucana chicks from the same hatch and 8 Andalusian chicks that are 4 weeks old. Both are pullets and really didn't want to pose for a picture! It will be interesting to see what color the eggs are.

Yes, it is too hot in most of the country to be shipping eggs (or chicks). The silver lining is that you can take a look on EBay or the other auction sites and know who isn't ethical because anyone with any compunctions isn't shipping right now.

My two month old hatchery girls from Mi Out of 10 chicks, I have three pullets that should make purtty eggs ( I'm a hopin and whishin)

Someday I'll learn to take better bird pictures, but at least their pretty feather are visable

I wanted to tell you that I like your rooster but I know very little and soon those who are much more experienced might give you their opinion but they also would like more pictures, like front, 3/4 and just different angle shots. Are you planning on making show birds ? That does take a lot of time and work.

not wanting show birds just wanted to wait and get better birds to hatch from if the ones we already have are not "up to code"! i just figured it would be best to start with Good birds if we were wanting to "make" our own and keep the line going. But then again...i have no idea how any of it works and it seems i spend all my time with my chicks or on here reading EVERYTHING! lol ill try to get more pics in the morning so everyone can tell me what they think. thanks again

Don't give up! It took me several tries hatching - every hatch was nothing but a couple roosters. I finally found some pullets and I'm so happy with them. I would send you some eggs- but it's so darn hot! My egg color isn't the best anyway. Isn't Josh44 in TX too? He had some really dark eggs!

Well thats just it, this isnt my first time hatching. Ive had numerous hatches that went great. There was one other time that it didnt go well and that was with araucanas. But it wasnt anything I had done, come to find out that person had 3 or 4 other customers that had the same problem. It was a fertility problem. I dont know what happened this time. Yes thats who I bought these eggs from, Josh. Please dont mistake this post, Im not saying anythign bad about Josh's eggs. Who knows what happened. It could have been that the eggs went through an xray machine, or any other mishaps. Josh had lovely eggs! They were dark and a couple of them had those nice deep rich spots on the eggs. I would pass up having the darkest eggs, if all my hens would like speckled eggs like that all the time.

lol. Whenever he has them available I will be getting eggs from him again. I loved them.

I've been having awful luck lately with shipped eggs too. I used to get 60% up to 100% on shipped eggs, but the post office is DESTROYING the poor embryos lately on almost every shipment in the past month. These are even eggs from sellers that I've previously had great hatches from, so I know it's not their eggs causing the trouble. I hate the post office!

It is too hot in most of the country to be shipping eggs (or chicks) right now, reputable and knowledgeable breeders know better. Make a list of people who are selling now, wait until Fall and then don't buy from anyone that is shipping now. Some exception can be made for short distances during breaks in the heat but that would be an exception, not the rule. If you want birds, chicks or eggs from me right now, plan on driving here or paying me $0.35/mile for hand delivery.
