The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My roo(s) are from Nancy too. I think they are so beauitiful- and very mild mannered. I recently rehomed the older one because my wheaten ameraucana was bullying him and tearing up his tail feathers. Poor guy!

I have seen very few other wellies in person. When I visited a fellow BYC member with girls from Nancy I noticed they were more ""brownish" than my girls are. Now that I go back and look at pics I am wondering if mine are too red? Either way- I love them! I have yet to grow out any female chicks and see what kind of color they have. Too many baby roos!

I don't know if you can tell from the pic- but I didn't do any adjusting to the color. Opinions?

Ewesheep.......Thanks! I'll look at getting eggs from them when I'm ready. Gotta finish the new coop first.

HappyMtn......I love my rooster. He's a fantastic protector of my hens. I never have to worry about turning my back on him. (unlike my olive egger rooster who came close to flogging me the other day, luckily I turned around fast enough and he decided not to) I just want to get him some nice ladies that are unrelated to him. I have 1 girl that is not ideal for breeding as she is not the proper coloring, so I'll put her in with my layers when I get the new girls. The other hen I have looks to be correct. I'm by no means an expert, so I'm not much help in commenting on yours. You should get nice eggs though!

The eggs are great- not super dark, but I'm really happy with them. I have 2 hens like her- they have really nice patterned feathers and all, but just seem redder than others. Maybe I can get a better pic of their backs. Everyone is hiding in the woods today. It's so flipping HOT!

ETA- ok here's their backs:

Happy~

The first photo of her does make her appear very red, but next photo of the 2 together does not show them as very red. If you are happy with the eggs and the birds.......it really doesn't matter unless you are breeding or showing. I wouldn't use her for breeding if she is indeed as red as the first photo makes her appear. Here is a couple photos of some of my hens that were massacred months ago by the neighbors dogs......the one in the front with white looking earlobes is the only surviving hen out of that flock. She had some sort of illness when I took this photo that is why her earlobes are white...made her eggs white and white spotted too. Never did figure that one out, but about a short week later she was totally fine and has been ever since. Anyway this is how my birds color out upon maturity.....are they that much different than your gal in question?

These are not the best photos but it does show one of my current younger pullets colors wonderfully and very accurately.

I would love to get some Welsummer chicks for my two broody girls right now but no one is shipping or have any right now. They have been sitting on the eggs for over 21 days and not sure how much longer they will "break" their broodiness.

Nobody is shipping right now but, if you just have to have them, I'm the closest to you geographically.

My rankings would be (LF only):

TailFeather's Friend (from rumors only)

TailFeathers (Royce)

Pink Chick (Kim)

EweSheep (Robin)

Lensters (myself)

Nate (not sure of his BYC handle, the kid from TX)

new2chooks (you, based mainly on Moose)

Now everyone knows where their birds stand with me.

My two Ameraucanas are doing the same. They leave their nest for a couple of hours in the morning so the chicks never have a chance. I've tried giving them live chicks too, but they trample them. I'm going to put them in cages soon because they are going on 9 weeks of this now.

I think that your girls were crossed with something red at one point and are carriers of a Columbian gene. That is just my guess from the wild crosses I do with my EEs. I'm guessing the hen on the right of the second picture is the same as the hen in the first picture. The background and lighting make it look more or less red.

Nate is SFIcelandics.

Tailfeather's friend, would be Erhard out in WA. He sometimes comes on here but not so often. A very nice fellow. Tailfeathers got his stock from him as well.

I should probably be grateful they edited out any obscenities. I'm writing from the oil field above the Arctic Circle here...and a pretty coarse crowd.

Slope workers coarse??? You don't say??
