The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Well there is no doubt about my Wellie now. The little boy started crowing and last night he went after one of my Delaware hens looking a bit like a banty after a LF girl only to be rebuffed by the old lady.

He will need a new home very soon as Freezer Camp schedule has him attending in November. (24 weeks)

We already have one or I would take him. They are the most beautiful roosters and with the color of the hens eggs it was a no brainer for us. We stuck ours in the coop with our egg layers. :)

Our welsummer pullets are the same. Somewhat timid but once holding them they calm down. Very vocal. My welsummer cockerel is much friendlier and always has been. I think our girls just need more interaction. :)

Mine are vocal as well, although not as much as my Speckled Sussex :O Holy wow. One especially named Lucy, it's actually annoying at times lol!

You make a good point, I wonder if I just haven't interacted with the as much. They've never wanted it so I tended to focus on a few of the others that are receptive. I'm going to try hand feeding snacks maybe. I do have one that will actually peck you once you put her down from "cuddle time" >:/

My girls are little prima donnas. Skittish, anti social, you name it except for one thing that really surprised me.

I recently had two Wellie girls wind up with bumblefoot, both of them on both feet at the same time. What are the odds? Anyway, I wasn't looking forward to treating them simply because of their personalities, yet once I had caught them, brought them into the house and plopped them down an Ice Cream tub with two inches of warm epsom salt water in it, they became little angels. Sweeties both of them. I wrapped them up in a towel (not together), laid them on their backs in my lap and they stayed there, sometimes talking to me, sometimes dozing as I treated their feet. I couldn't ask for better patients than those two have been. I laughingly told my husband that if that was all it took to give them personality makeovers, I would have given them a bed of nails to walk on when they were just fledglings. Just joking of course.

He thought maybe they were just enjoying the air conditioning.

Lol!!! Little rottens! They liked being pampered ;) I think too that once they realize that you aren't going to hurt them they settle down *sometimes* hehe!

Make sure to update.. I'll give it a try as well. :)

Agrees...... wattlage say cockerel, breast plumage says pullet......but the white tips on feathers say mutt to me.

I agree on a mix. The chest looks pretty golden. If it's a mix it could be a cockerel because of the wattle..

I'm thinking mix as well and leaning toward cockerel also

Thank you all. I too think he's not quite the same as the other roos in the bunch. The others are much darker. Especially since he's a roo, way too light on the chest. Also, he stands out in the group because he's getting quite a bit bigger than the others. I'm going to have a giant bossy mutt. He's good with people so far, but bossy to the other chicks. I also got a cuckoo Maran rooster that I did not ask for. He's very pretty now. I'm afraid I will need to rehome them both. I only have barred rock girls and wellie girls.
