The Welsummer Thread!!!!

@CuzChickens
 Hey Neighbor :frow  I'm up in the blue ridge mountains, too! I've got 12 welsummers right now, too. Most are chicks. I adore my two hens, though. Both have gone broody and been great moms.
I can not wait for a broody hen! All my hens are supposedly good broodies, but I have not had any yet. What part of the Blue Ridge are you in? I live near Fancy Gap and Hillsville.

I'm familiar with the area, my husband is from Floyd. We used to travel down Fancy Gap on 77 to eat seafood at a place in NC. We're over in Botetourt County now.

Broody hens are wonderful. I guess I lucked out with my two hatchery hens. Wendy is a super-mom. She hatched more eggs than my LF cochin! I need to do bumble foot surgery on my other welsummer hen this evening. Hopefully it is an easy one-time deal like my leghorn hen.

Ugh, Bumble foot. Good luck with that one, I have not had to deal with it yet, but I dread the day I have to...:p I love Floyd! I recently stayed with family there for 5 days, and it was a blast. I looked us up on Google Maps, and we are only 2 hours apart! You are the second closest person I have met on here, the other person lives in Fort Chiswell, so she is only 45 minutes away.

Here are all the different shades of eggs I get, the two eggs on the far right are what I assume are Welsummers, I do not think I have any chickens other than them that lay such dark eggs, but what I don't know is, do you think they are both coming from the same hen, or do I have two hens laying? Thank you for your input!

Can you all tell me from personal experience how the temperament of your Welsummer hens has been around bantam hens with no roos in the flock? Welsummer history has Leghorn in its creation and Legs can get pretty assertive. Am looking to see if Wellies have better temperaments than assertive Legs. I know Wellies can be sweet birds but how are the older mature hens toward bantams in a small backyard free-range flock? What's the avg weight of your Wellies?

We've tried Marans for pretty dark eggs but don't like their stand-offishness toward human interaction to downright bully behavior toward Silkies.

Oh man I can't see your signature because I'm on my phone, our computer is out of commission :( I have the ones I mentioned and then SLW's too :D
I have SLW's too!! Here is my signature, I copied and pasted it: Living in the blue ridge mountains of VA. 3 pigs, 2 cows, 8 Silver laced wyandottes, 4 Welsummers, 5 Speckled Sussex, 5 Buff Orpingtons, 1 White Leghorn, 1 Light Brahma, 2 Black Australorps, 7 Partridge rocks,and 3 Golden Laced Wyandottes. Planning on getting Blue Copper Marans, Blue Ameraucanas, and Cream Legbars next year.

I have never had bantams, but all 4 of my poor Welsummers are so gentle, they are on the very bottom of the pecking order, I would not worry about it. My Welsummers are about 4-5 lbs and about 15 inches tall.
