The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Pretty gal non the less, and if ya keep her you'll want more both the males and females feather and grow out nicely. The males seem to be more docile than the females ours is quite chaty and snobby ha, but the roo is one heck of a fella.

My guy Lars 6 months old :)

And then this HUGE egg from one of the girls, it weighed 2.35 oz! It's the one in the middle, and the on the right is a 2.5 oz-r from one of the BO's and on the left is a 'normal' Wellie egg

My Welsummer girls have laid eggs in the 2.3 ounce range but my Buff O girls haven't even been coming close to that weight. I'm impressed!

Mesmomma Lars is a handsome boy. He's going to be HUGE when he matures! Get ready to slather Vasoline on that comb and wattles this winter. One of my Welly roos effectively dubbed his own comb during a cold spell. He was the only rooster in my flock who didn't have the good sense to tuck his head under his wing and managed to freeze off every point.

I've been SHOCKED at the size of some of my BO's eggs :O A lot of double yolkers all of a sudden?? Weird.

As far as Lars' comb...yeah I LOVE his comb and reallly don't want him to lose it so hopefully I can get the Vaseline on it. How often do you apply it? My BO roo lost his points too before he came to live here :( Their combs really are an attractive feature! He's still the main man in the chicken yard though ;)

Vaseline does prevent frostbite. It is non polar and repels water. Ever try to wash your hands with Vaseline on them? It's the same effect.

I was going to say that I had pretty good luck with the Vaseline, or Bag Balm also during cold spells last winter. Hens that I managed to catch and grease up fared much better than those I didn't. Nor did it seem to attract dirt any more than I expected it to. I applied when I heard temps were edging towards the teens and just applied as needed.

Just a note.I didn't glob it on either but found that the roosters with big wattles fared better when I applied Vaseline and they shed water off their wattles when they drank. No Vaseline and they froze their wattles and sounded like castanets when they walked around.
