The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hi PinkChick. I left her locked in the coop until dark. (dark slipped up on me while I was sewing!) Kellogg and Henny were fit to be tied, trying to get into the coop! They were flying into the wiring across the window! I let them in, they were weird the whole night! Instead of getting on the roost, Kellogg got IN one of the nests, Henny got on the ledge in front of him! I went out several times until a little after midnight, they were still there, asleep!

Pebbles slept on the floor (pine shavings) in the corner. At first she was all huddled up, but later in the night, she was more relaxed looking. This morning, she was still in the coop with the other 2 out in the yard. When Kellogg went in the coop, she would get hysterical, but he didn't even try to bother her. She is just still scared. (I certainly don't blame her!) I locked them out for now. I have a dog carrier, and some extra wire. I will have to see what I can do with either her or Kellogg. I don't know how I will get him in a different place, being how scared I am of him!

I may have to settle for putting Pebbles in the new area. Thanks for all of your help/advice. I really appreciate it! Will let you know.

Another newbie question for the Welsummer experts out there. Have 7 week chicks. Up to now have been feeding them in the run twice a day but now want to keep the feeder inside the coop permanently to avoid attracting wild animals and to keep it dry. Problem is they don't know it's in there or don't notice it as they still come flying out of the coop twice daily and go nuts when I put the feeder in the run. Will these guys ever catch on that they can eat at the feeder available 24/7 in the coop? When I moved the feeder from the coop today to the run they acted like they were starved (even though it had been available all day in the coop).

Thoughts?

They will learn pretty quick... When ever I move the feeder, I try and make noise where I am feeding them now... The they usually all come running over...

Ok you all have made me want some wellsummers, I had never heard of them until I got on this forum. They sound wondeful.

I would like to buy some eggs to hatch.

I have 2 leghorn hens, 2 light brama hens, 12 briolers about 5 weeks old, 9 chicks that I hatched out of my leghorn hens X New Hampshire red about 6 weeks old. 6 1 week old Buff orpingtons that I hatched.

I love my chickens, I spend lots of time just watching them.... Lisa

Just wanted to post a picture of my young man Chanticleer... He has turned into such a handsome and curteous gentleman for the ladies. He is my only Wellie and my only roo.

Well, I'll tell you a story... When hubby was a kid a rooster, looked much like this in coloring but not as big(probably Gamecock), showed up and took up residence with their dog. Ate with the dog, slept with and sometimes on the dog, and followed it everywhere.
So when I showed hubby a picture the first time of a BCM he made a comment that he wouldn't mind having one that looked like their childhood rooster. So one day BYC member Shelleyd2008 had this couple of Welsummers and not knowing whether they were actually a pair we decided I should buy the pair just in case. Turned out that the smaller one was actually a very slow maturing cockerel, so he went to a new home and Chanty is the lead man of the flock. Hubby thinks he is so pretty and can't get over how huge he is. Keeps saying he is definitely larger than the one they had.
