The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks everyone! I have to say that life is sooooooooo much sweeter now that I get more than one Wellie egg a day. Seems like it took forever to rebuild the flock, it was very tempting to just order more eggs or chicks from someone else instead of rebuilding the hard way with one hen and one roo, but it was so worth it.

Welcome Gallus! Thanks for sharing Rusty with us.....do you have any other photos of him and of your girls?

I'm sure it's been answered before, but can we go over how to count the comb points again. Our Wellie roos all have that broad 1st section, then points, then that final part (not sure what you call it).

This handsome guy has a nice comb. How many points would you count?

Thanks!

five points to a comb, not including the meaty parts. It should be evenly serrated, not uneven or "glued" together.

This came from the UK site: Comb single, of medium size, firm upright, free from any twists or excess around nostrils, clear of nostrils and of fine, silky texture, five to seven broad and even serrations, the back following closely but not touching the line of the skull and neck.

As for us, Americans, we like the comb points to be five...seven is a bit too much.

i went out and looked and he has 6 points, evenly spaced....his comb and wattles have surpassed my RIR 's ....he has started to practice his crow..still sounds like a broken horn but he's working on it!!!!

I'm still not sure if this is a pure wellie or an olive egger, but the picture is so funny, I had to share. (1 week old)

I'm thinking boy, how bout you?

Don't know what happened but one of our Welsummer cockerals was dead in the crate this afternoon

so we have 3 girls and 2 boys left. We're thinking he might have flown into the side and broke his neck.
