The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Are Welsummers often so late to lay? All six of mine are about the same age and I am still waiting.

Oh wait, if I go a few posts back I can see this is already answered.

Freeloaders huh? Yeah that is what they are.

2x! He has good conformation too...wide and more brick like than a Leghorn shape.

My poor boy has frostbite on his comb but it does not seem to bother him that much. By spring he will heal or some of the tips will fall off. I had a few bloody tips but it didn't seems to be painful because the comb was warm to the touch instead of cold. I would prefer a smaller combed roo for sever weather or being outdoors more than he is inside.

Gage, freeloaders eventually give up their possessions soon!

Grandma, sometimes they do take a day off LOL!

Nice looking roo. I lost my one and only roo the week of July 4th. I was out of town, when I got home I started gathering up dark eggs. I had only one hatch, thankfully it was a roo. Hopefully this Spring I will be able to put him over my hens and hatch out a few more. I love my Wellies!

I am throwing an idea at all of you........

I've been getting repeated requests about an egg color chart for the Welsummers, similar to the Marans egg color chart.

There are so many variations and the only thing I can think of are these:

shipped dud, infertile or blown out eggs.

I will see if I can find a good photographer that can do the job and matching up the colors of the eggs. I will have to try mine first to see how it developed.

As for choosing the eggs, in different shades and matte or shine, etc. it is going to be difficult........I need to read up MORE on selecting eggs and what they should look like.

I was worried about mine too, but boy oh boy, once they did start laying eggs, they laid a LOT of eggs and all so beautiful and different from each other. I can see now why people have told me the welsummer eggs are the best-sellers at farmers markets. Even though the organic store eggs are fairly dark brown, they are all a very plain solid brown color, no comparison with welsummers!

Morning Everyone!

Robin~ That's a great idea and it sounds like it is going to be a little bit of a challenge. Let me know if I can be of any assistance in any way to help you out. I think a color chart would be great!

Does the Standard say anything about egg colour and/or speckles vs plain? I think the idea of a chart would be great; I know computer monitors don't always represent colours accurately, and that some people prefer speckled to plain; I like both!

G-ma~

I don't believe the standard states anything about smooth or speckled eggs, both are acceptable as long as they have that Terra Cotta colored hue. I love them both but the speckled ones have to be my favorite.

Pinkchick is correct, there is NO standard in having speckled or plain. As long it is in terra cotta hue, depending on how LIGHT or how DARK the egg is, would be acceptable. You do not want it too light that it would not be of "dark egg layer" nor too dark that it resembles too much like the Marans egg. People HAVE been crossing their Welsummers over Marans to get the dark shade which I do not like and would frown on that if they are trying to pass the offsprings as Welsummers, when they are really crossbreeds. It would have been absolutely fine if one wants to breed them for egg layers only.

Whether the surface is shiney or matte finished, it does not matter however in the UK, the matte is preferred. I like them both!

As for me, I'm the odd lady out, I prefer the "smooth" look than the speckles. The "wild" speckles, the oddly splashed paint appearance is a neat thing! Those are fun for Easter Egg color dye projects LOL!

If anyone wants to ship a couple of dud eggs, I would appreciate it! NO, I will NOT incubate them. Its too cold out, dont want the mess in the basement, no broody moms and don't want higher electric bill for the brooder light. I'm happy with THAT!

Sure I miss those fuzzy butts!

Once I gather up all the dud eggs, I will line them up in carton according to shades and if there are anything that looks rejectable because it is too light or too dark, I will put them in the DQ list. I've got to do a bunch of research.
