Welcome Greenriver, I breed Wellies and live near you in NW IN and they do quite well for me yearround (incredible free rangers and pretty consistent egg layers even in winter-have a greenhouse roof on my coop) and are one of my very favorite breeds. My coop is 16 x16 and have windows open year round for ventilation though my walls are insulated with foam board which is covered w// plywood. A little behind on my Wellie reading, so apologize if this response is redundant.

WoW! So sorry your post was overlooked. Welcome to the Welsummer thread!
I have not had any problems with Welsummer combs during the winter but then again we have pretty mild winters with the occassional cold snap and they do just fine, but our winters out here are nothing compared to a Chicago area winter. I suspect they will be fine. I know Nate (SFIcelandics) and Ewesheep live in colder climate areas and they have not reported any comb issues. Hoping more come by and give their opinions for you.
IMO....you will L-L-L-OOOOOOVE Welsummers if you get them!
Almost forgot to say Thank you to everyone for the compliments on the speckly egg....I just love going out to the coops to see what kind of pretty eggs the girls decided to give me! Ahhhh...the incredible edible egg!

Aren't the difference in the eggs neat, even from day to day-ours have slight variations! One hen lays a pretty uniform solid color and the other has a speckly one-now if we just knew who laid each one
