The Welsummer Thread!!!!

No lights on my girls. No need to "burn" them out faster. If they dont lay, then I will wait until spring.

My Welsummer Bantam girls were hatched out in March of this year and I have not yet seen any eggs from them. Their combs are getting redder so either they are getting ready or they are eating their eggs...no signs of broken eggs yet that I can observe.

I love looking at all the photos of the wellies.
Here is Elliott, a very nice roo that I got from Opa:

I love my Wellies so far. Mine are all just about 4 months old and are SO much calmer than some birds I could mention~LOL I can't wait for these girls to start laying

I don't have many pictures of them, the ones I do have are posted in the Welsummer show that Tailfeathers included a link for. I'll try to get some better pictures of the good Wellie hens as they were from PinkChick.

Glad to hear of so many who are happy with their welsummers. I've been a little dissappointed in mine. Got a half-dozen chicks last April and culled down to just one. All of mine were a bit unfriendly to people, although they got on well with the other birds. The one that we ended up keeping is a beautiful bird, but the worst layer I've ever had. Lucky if we get 3 eggs a week. My silkies lay better than that, and they at least let me pick them up if I need to.

My first Wellie eggs at a little over 5 months. I was a little suprised when they started laying. I figured I had to wait until spring.

Great, friendly, vigorous breed. Fastest to grow, first to lay and the first to figure things out. Really good hardy roosters. Definetely the Alpha rooster from the get go. when mine hears a hen do the egg call when they are free ranging, he will make a nest for the hens and call them over to lay. He tolerates my Ameraucana rooster no problem and is not rough on the hens.

I have 12 hens and not a shy one in the bunch. I can pick up every one by just bending over and picking them up.

I wanted them for the dark eggs and have been very happy how they turned out overall. I gave a rooster to my friend and he raves about how good he looks in the sun.

Question: I have a couple Marans hens mixed in. How can I tell if I am getting a marans egg?

Actually, I think that you have the same amount of Maran eggs as Wellies in the pictures. The Wellie eggs have a reddish brown color completely through their shell, fairly uniform with some variation or slight speckling allowed, which also carries through the shell. The Marans eggs are a nice brown color egg, uniform in color, with a layer of dark chocolate colored coating on the top that can be scratched off. On the best Marans eggs the color will cover the entire shell but on most of what you find in the US they are largely speckled.
