I had one rooster (not a Wellie) that was not a jerk unless I was carrying the water bucket out of the coop. Pick up the bucket and he was all over it......put the bucket down and he would stop immediately. Crazy birds!

Thanks friends for the congrats....for sure this was a crazy good hatch.....only ever had one other Wellie hatch this good and that was like 2 years ago.

Here are 16 of the 18 that were in the brooder yesterday when I took this photo. The 2 late hatchers were still drying off in the 'bator. Final count is 4 males and 14 pullets.

There are 6 Barnevelders, 6 Olive Eggers and 6 Marans from this hatch too, I don't think they were all in there when I took this picture.

Hi ChikieLyn! Thanks for the kind words. I am very glad that you are enjoying them. They are alot of fun and it's always nice to hear from folks that have them and keep caught up with how they progress.
Yep....that boy looks just like his papa.....except this boy has a TOTALLY cool comb and my Odin boy does not. It's really nice to see him. He will change alot over the next couple of months, and by this I mean he will beef up, I know he is already pretty large, but he will get bigger. Odin is weighing in at 11.5 lbs this summer and he is just now 2 years old. Odin is also VERY tall.

As for the photos....I agree with Opa about the angles and view of the birds that help us see them.

I only have one bone to pick with you though.......Where's the photos of the pullets?????????????

Oh and WELCOME to the Wellie thread!

Haha - I had just fed some treats when I got the bright idea to take photos, and they were busy running around, protecting their treats (JD shares his with his girls). I'll try to take their photos next weekend if it ever stops raining here (odd for our neck of the woods). Thanks for the kind words and the photo hints, and I'm SO ENJOYING THIS!!!!

Hello, everybody. I added 12 Welsummer chicks to our family a couple weeks ago. They will be a month old June 8. I've been following this thread since then and thought I should say hi.
The information on sexing the chicks has been interesting. The breeder tried to pick out at least half pullets for me but he indicated the nice little v's on the heads weren't always accurate.
So far nobody has a bigger/pinker comb. They are growing like weeds and I love my little chipmunks!

Are there any photos out there of what Welsummers are supposed to look like? I've been to the Welsummers club page, and just don't see the kind of photos that make you go, "Oh, that's what they're supposed to look like." Unfortunately I've not been to a large poultry show, and I imagine they're done for the year anyway (my DH and I got into this a month after the big Stockton, CA show). I'm finding 2 young Wellies here, and 2 young Wellies there, but no adult birds. Ha - maybe I'm asking for more pictures of good "SOP" (is that the right term?) conformation. I'll try not to continually assault you all with questions - I'm just smitten with these birds. Heck, I'm at work right now... good thing I'm married to the boss, or I'd get fired for talking about chickens all day!
