The Welsummer Thread!!!!

well I have 20 Welsummers chicks on the way to me soon and have a couple questions. I am getting straight run chicks so will have more than enough roos to go around. Question is will I be alright to leave them together since they will be raised together or will I need to keep them separated from the ladies to prevent fighting. I would like to keep all the roos as I want to see them mature and keep the best couple for breeding stock. Would like to keep them all together if possible. If I seperate them can I have one pen with all the roos together or will they still fight. Thanks for any input

Pics of todays new Wellie egg. Third from left... I have 2 Wellies and I know at least one is laying because I saw her doing her thing this AM. The 2 second from left I am assuming are from my BCM girl - could they be dark Wellie eggs? They don't quite have the tone of a Marans Egg - what do you all think?

I'm doing that with my barnevelders! They are driving me crazy! They are now 25 weeks - it's getting harder to be patient.

Congratulations on your lovely eggs Kelly! Oh and good luck with the patience thing with the Barnies...I swear I was going to pull my hair out waiting for Stephanie to start laying and then all of a sudden......BAMM, 6 mos and 1 day old, she gave me her first egg. I think that we think they are taking forever because of how much slower they mature vs our other breeds. Ug and Stephs first daughter is laying and takes after her mommy and won't lay in the nest box. My one and only girl from Johan's eggs this year should be getting ready in about a month, watch she'll lay on the floor as well.

Still have 4 more girls to wait on after that as well.

Okay back to Wellie's.

My girls are molting....no pretty Wellie eggs for me at present.

Can't wait to see everyone else's eggs too, I know there are quite a few folks out there that got eggies from me and their kiddos should be getting pretty close if your girls and Steve's girls are already laying. Going to have to send off an email to CherylCohen to see what her girls are up to because they are just slightly older than yours.

To "Pinkchick" - I have 2 Wellie pullets from Cheryl Cohen that she got from you, hatched 2/15/11 and now at 28 weeks are not laying yet. One looks like she will any day (I'll try to post some pics this weekend) and the other one is just starting to develop. As soon as I get eggs you better believe I'll be posting pics!

Welsummers don't lay as DARK as the BCM would but there is a different tone color to it too! The third egg from the left is a Welsummer egg.

Not all of our monitors are created equally, some would cheat you of a color it really isn't.

What do you think of the 2 next to the green eggs? At first I thought BCM, but I am not even sure she is laying yet... They don't really have the tone of a BCM so I am wondering if they are dark Wellie eggs because I am positive that one of my 2 Wellies is laying(third from left) and both of my Wellies are the same age...
