The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Wow they are a month old already.......... it didn't seem so long ago you posted the pictures.. they do grow quick......
Glad they are doing well, is it normal for boys to start out with girl feathering in wellies or is that some kinda fluke? probably would of been the chicks I would have picked hehehe
I'm ever so good at picking out roosters.LOL 2 outa 3 is my average. So will you be able to post some updated pictures so we can see the difference in the feathering you described?
and you know me picture crazy......
PS when might they be ready for pick up, and about when do Wellies start laying 6 months or later? I never thought to ask that one, but post above reminded me. TY Kim

Since this is the second year that we have had a boy chick look like this we know that 1 or both of our older hens is throwing this type of feathering. Some breeds have a hen line and a rooster line but to my understanding the Welsummer breed doesn't recommend that

I might be able to get a couple pictures to post, we have been fighting the flu this week so I am moving a little slower.

We are still in a growing pattern with the chicks so that DD can pick out which ones she wants to grow up for fair this year. Hoping to give them a good look over once we feel better and see if we notice any differences. Are you looking for using them as layers or for possible breeders down the line?

Ours maybe started around 6 months or a little later- it depends on the bird.... probably not an overly helpfull answer

No just curious about point of lay I get so impatient LOL at least this way I can at least have a guess date. hehehe
I just want layers Not your very best birds, I'm too old to get into showing, been their done that with horses, its alot of work and I already have so much I need a 48 hour day......possibly breeding at some point if everything else around here goes well I need more pens.. or breeding coops, which means more moneys, that we don;t have just now with Adams unemployment running out in March, and time... so will see. I would like at least 5 hens though will you have that many? Ty Kim

quick count on paper shows we have 20 Welsummer chicks hatched- didn't go look to see how many are boys and how many are girls but thinking there were more girls than boys. Are you wanting a boy as well? Have 1 that we know for sure that DD won't be able to use as he has a couple of bent toes.

Might have a better idea a little later today- have to move them to a different pen and can then look over them a bit closer and take a few pictures and post as long as the lap top is back up and running.....

Let me know when you were thinking of being down in this area.

Well we won't need to be down that way until June, but I can't wait that long....... I want to have them while they are still small enough to tame them, so they are friendly like my other hens, so Sometime in February or as late as March if you need to wait that long so as too make the best picks for the 4H projects, we will just plan a day trip down and visit a bit and pick em up whenever it's convenient for you all.....

It isn't a big deal for us when, except before they are too old. If they are all pretty tame already that isn't even an issue, I just want to be able to handle my chickens, to check them for health, trim nails, doctor them up should any boo boo's happen, without having to get a net and chase the poor girls while listening to them squawk like we are butchering them on the spot. .hehe. I feel so bad when they holler...LOL
Not sure If I want a boy yet, I sorta do because he could be my mixed flock man, if I find some AM's for my GrayBeard, but I have 4 roo's just now and just can't make up my mind, If I want to keep roos for breeding I guess I should take 1 and just make a rooster pen to keep them all in when not breeding, except maybe 1 protector.... though I have had no critters so far attempt to come in the yard, guess we have too many dogs..... horses and people running here. but ya never know better be safe than sorry..... you don't by chance know anyone who would like a very Nice big pretty White Wyandotte rooster for free...he has the coolest rose comb... it's huge... hes a great big boy nice, friendly you can do anything with him.... but he is an extra, no plans to breed Wyandottes, just can't make myself butcher the poor guy..... I will post his picture here 1 more time so anyone on the way could also have me drop him off if they want him..... we take 41 south, to 26 to 39 so anyone along that route could get a nice free rooster if they want him for their girls..... So just let me know when the best time is to make your picks and we'll
go from there. Here's Fred

Have you posted Fred on the WI thread-maybe someone there would be interested in him. I'll touch base with you once we see who is who- we do handle the chicks as it makes it easier to pick them up and such.

This morning while feeding and watering the birds I discovered two eggs in the cage with the two Welsummer pullets. They must have been laid yesterday as there were two more eggs this afternoon. Like a dummy I kept putting off making a backup copy of all my chicken records so that when I spilled a cup of coffee into the keyboard of my laptop they were lost. That being said I think that the pullets are 28 or 29 weeks old. Just hang in there they will lay.

OHH I love pictures....hehehe
beautiful Wellies...... what a cute little hen next to your roo. I can't comment on the other hen except LOL what a cute fluffy butt.......

In the top picture it goes: 2 BBS Cochin Eggs, 2 Wellie eggs, 2 Olive Egger eggs (Ameraucana x Welsummer), and 2 BBS Ameraucana Eggs.

Here is the Olive Egger with the Ameraucanas.
