The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Caught a few photos of the girls a couple days ago out free ranging and playing around and thought I would share.

Here is my youngest girl who I do not believe that I will be using for breeding. Not altogether happy with her egg color. It's a lovely light Terra Cotta color and not the deep rich color that I was expecting, but she is a nice girl.

#8 the Trouble Maker and despite her name she is one of my favorite chickens. :)

and can't remember which one this is as she lost leg band, but I believe she is #17. Geesh! LOL!

I thank you for clarifying that....I thought he was working to "improve" the Silver and Gold Duckwing Welsummers. Isn't that what breeders should do if that is all the genetic pool they had from England/Germany? I hope they are on their way, even it may be a long shot, but I know he CAN do it.

Erhard has both Gold and Silver Duckwing Welsummers. To my knowledge he is not "working" on them. Meaning, as far as I know, Erhard is not crossing his Gold & Silver Welsummers with any of his Standard Welsummers.

And, I'm fairly confident and believe safe in saying that even if he was crossing the Gold or Silvers with his Standards, he wouldn't be shipping eggs from the cross without asking first if someone wanted them. I think Erhard is still doing mostly flock breeding vice linebreeding as I do but even then I know he still has his birds separated and I can tell you that his Gold and Silver Welsummers aren't anywhere in the vicinity of his standard Welsummers.

God Bless,

I've got an uncle and his family living in Pirgutsville, WV, probably not too far from you.

I was going to see if hubby can pick up chicks on the way back from Tamarack next year for you on his way back home but its too far out of his way. However we ARE planning on going to Gettysburg in July, 2013! If we can work up something, we might be able to stop somewhere on the highway and wait for you to pick up chicks. However you might be better off getting some hatching eggs from her.

Moved the Lav Ameraucanas and Wellies in the rabbit hutch out of the shed. It was all new for them! LOL! Just beautiful! And they certainly got the copy cat traits of Nate Vanwey girls I have!

Glad to see you on this thread. I think this is one of the friendliest thread on BYC. Everyone is very helpful and supportive. I started with hatchery Welsummers, but didn't like how they looked, or the egg color. I swapped Buckeye eggs for some of Nate Vanwey's eggs, and ended up with some really nice stock. I learn a lot from thsi thread and from the helpful experts that participate in the thread.

I'm not going to the swap, its just too far from Charleston. DH went two years ago and picked up some of Peachicks chicks for me, but it was a long trip, 6 hours. We're having a monthly sale here in our area and its doing pretty well gaining momentum.

Hello all,

Questions, how often do your Wellies go broody? I have one that just hatched 6 Wellie/ FBCMARAN Xs. She also hatched a lavender Ameracana/ FBCMaran, this should be a dark olive egg. What do you think the color will be like on the Wellie/FBCM? And now i have another one going broody. Wish I had a Wellie Roo. Guess I will have to get some eggs to hatch from the breeders here in Florida.

Maye
