The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks, I figured as much, but I was so hoping I was wrong. Bummer. Seems like all my recent chicks have been boys!

bobbieschicks.......those are both cockerels.

I thought I would ask the Welsummer experts - I have two chicks that are both 6 weeks old that look like this one. Are they pullets or roos? Or is it too early to tell?

I've found it rather discouraging for someone to ask what the sex of the birds are and have to listen to everyone chime in with the fact that they are cockerels. So I won't do that, I'll just tell you not to expect eggs.

Thank you for sparing me :) However all may not be lost as today I was encouraged to find out my black AM may very well be a pullet. If I take my AM pullet and let one of these handsome Wellies mate her, well then I may just get some olive eggs, another color I've been wanting for my flock. A slight trade off considering I really wanted the dark wellie eggs. Guess I will need to try again once I have another broody. Only next time I'll be sure to order only the eggs with pullets inside ;)

darn. I've hatched mostly pullets here at home.
So that's where all the pullets are - just kidding. Once my broody starts up again I'm sure I'll be contacting you for some more hatching eggs. I definitely still want a dark layer or two.

Erhard Wiehs is working on the Duckwing (both in Gold and Silver) patterns in his Welsummers. So if you get your eggs/chicks from him, there is your answer. Even it is not accepted in this country but they are the true Duckwings that has not been crossed over by another breed to get the color effect. I know he is working on it and you should continue to work on it as well.
Erhard has both Gold and Silver Duckwing Welsummers. To my knowledge he is not "working" on them. Meaning, as far as I know, Erhard is not crossing his Gold & Silver Welsummers with any of his Standard Welsummers.

And, I'm fairly confident and believe safe in saying that even if he was crossing the Gold or Silvers with his Standards, he wouldn't be shipping eggs from the cross without asking first if someone wanted them. I think Erhard is still doing mostly flock breeding vice linebreeding as I do but even then I know he still has his birds separated and I can tell you that his Gold and Silver Welsummers aren't anywhere in the vicinity of his standard Welsummers.

God Bless,
