The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I think a dog attack can have a really bad effect on chickens (I mean even it doesn't kill them). I know that when the dogs attacked my chickens last year, several roosters, and one male turkey, who had been very nice before, turned mean, and they never got over it either. They had to be culled. And it did seem to stem from the dog attack.

So it doesn't surprise me that it could affect laying.

Congrats on the nice eggs.

Someone asked me to show a pic of my Welsummer's egg, and here it is. This is actually the second egg she laid, the first one was rather small so I waited to see if the next one was bigger and it was. Isn't it gorgeous? The first one had more speckles, this one is very smooth and dark. For comparison I surrounded it with some of the eggs I collected today from my plymouth rocks and one of EE's who layes the biggest, prettiest light blue eggs.
So after almost a year I am rewarded

Can anyone help me with egg ID? I recently got some Barnevelder, Welsummers, and Marans.

Here are some egg pictures.

Any idea whose is whose? (light eggs are from Sussex and Wyandotte hens).

I've never done Barnies but you can tell a Wellie egg from a Marans by the "finish". Marans eggs are semi-gloss where Wellie eggs are satin. The Wellie eggs have a reddish tint while the Marans eggs shouldn't. However, I have seen a lot of the Marans with a reddish tint. The top left egg appears to be from a Wellie, the others aren't but I can't tell you if they are Marans or Barnies.

Okie Dokie, here's something for all you Welsummer Aficionados! Whether you be an Enthusiast or a Fanatic, I think some, if not many, of you will like this.

My friend, and long time breeder of Welsummers, would like to help me out with hatching egg orders. It's a long story but I'm not going to be able to sell anymore Welsummer Hatching Eggs this year so he is going to handle all my overflow and additional orders this year.

So what's the big deal you say? Well, here's your chance to get both Bantam and Large Fowl Welsummer eggs from one of the original Welsummer breeders that was responsible for getting the breed accepted into the APA. In other words, this guy knows his Welsummers. He's also, of course, where I got my stock from. I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that he has had Bantam Welsummers in the USA longer than anyone and is one of only a few to have them at all.

So why doesn't he just come to BYC himself? Well, he's an older Gentleman - and I emphasize Gentleman - and isn't very computer savvy. So I help him out as I can.

We both sell our eggs for $48/dozen which includes shipping and a few extra "insurance" eggs. If you are interested, please send me a personal email - not a PM - with your request and contact info. Then I'll get your info to him so he can contact you personally.

The ONLY thing I ask in return is that you treat my friend with the utmost respect and kindness. I've had a couple of dealing with a few absolute jerks on a couple of sites and I'd be sorely disappointed to hear someone treated him poorly.

God Bless,

I think this is really nice. Do you think there will be some eggs available in a month? I am planning a hatch for next week, but I am pretty full. I'll probably do another hatch in a month. I do the standard size Wellsummers.

Oh, and, I am always nice.

You know, my coop is starting to get pretty full. I am not sure what I am going to do.

In the summer, they free range, and it isn't such an issue, but if we have another winter like last one, well, it is.

Thank you Tailfeathers for the rec, did order a dozen LF Wellie eggs from the gentleman, a real pleasure to work with! Didn't have such a great hatch here, sure it was my incubator, but the few that did hatch are doing great. I ended up with 2 cockerals and 1 pullet Have since upgraded to the RCOM 20 incubator and am running my first set of eggs......will be interesting to see the results. Longtime Wellie Thread Lurker here, thank you everyone for your postings and the help contained within!

I just bought 18 of these little beauties, really looking forward to seeing them all grown up. Think I wound up with about 12 pullets and 6 roos. (give or take one or two that were iffy on sexing).
