The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Wonderful, so we got ripped off. Oh well, live and learn. Next round of chicks are ordered from somewhere.

THANKS!
trust me, you're not the first! Don't feel bad, you should end up with some nice laying hens out of that group. You can always sell them in the fall/spring to pay for more welsummers. I would study some chick pictures before you buy again so you make sure you know what you are getting. Sad that someone would take advantage like that

You could always invest in an incubator and hatch some for yourself too! I love my brinseas, but I've been happy with my new hovabator genesis as well. The brinsea is a little more fool proof.

I probably could send you some eggs but I just had some Vorwerk eggs under a broody fail. Until I can hatch some more and verify their fertility I wouldn't want to ship any.

Ooo, just let me know when they start hatching. Thanks for replying! Very Pretty!

Thanks, well it was more an instance of "oh these birds are rare, Welsummers. NOW, HAD they BEEN Welsummers yes they'd have been worth what we paid for them. I don't really care what breed they are as long as they lay nice medium to large eggs. The Banty's I know lay small, but I love them so much.

I'm convinced that EVERYTHING is a rip off nowadays. And no one can be trusted. So maybe eggs are the way to go. Sigh, if people were only honest.

THANKS!

PS~ We are pretty attached to them at this point so selling them is out. XD

Have you tried contacting the seller? Can you keep us posted with pictures as they get older, I'd love to know what they end up being.

That's one of the nice things about a forum like this. You can gain knowledge, but you can also see people's reputation. If someone is shady or does things to rip people off, word spreads pretty fast. Ewesheep and others are great about watching for ebay sellers that are trying to hoodwink people by either using others pictures or trying to pass something off as a breed that they aren't. As a chicken community we have to self police. You want to get the word out that whom ever you bought those from is not being honest!

Sorry that you were told one thing and found out differently :(. Maybe there is someone on here close to you that has pure Welsummers that you can add.

Welsummer Experts I Need Your Input Please!

I purchased 17 chicks, varying ages, from a local 'breeder' who assured me they are full blooded Welsummers and she showed
me the parent chickens when I came to pick up the chicks.

I have been researching Welsummers for some time and thought
the parent birds both looked to be pretty good Welsummer stock.

It was nearly dark by time we made it to her place for the chick pick up
and it was a crazy scene as she had the birds in various pens - not a very organized operation.

We knew the birds were 4 different ages so we were spending most
of our time sorting birds into the right boxes per age of chick.

When we FINALLY got them home and settled in their respective
brooding pens we noticed that they had quite a bit of barring which I
do not believe is part of being a Welsummer.

I'm going to try to post a few photos here, at various ages of the chicks
from week old to just yesterday so please let me know what you think
as far as breed purity. At least all 17 of them are gorgeous birds, active, healthy, seem to be very smart and have sweeter dispositions with wonderful voices and verbalizations - all of which is very different from the Barred Rocks that we raise!

Thanks for any input you may have to offer. I hope the pictures make it into the post for your review.

These all look like welsummers to me. The ones with dark lines behind their eyes are pullets and the ones without are roos. I have 19 welsummers about 3 months and they looked just like this at various ages.
