The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I no the trait is good, but my hen only got the white feathers in her moult and i like it, When im older im gonna breed welsummers and im going to try and breed a new colour where all their wing and tail feathers a white, just as a experiment, and im not going to kill her as she will be crossed with my wyandotte so her ofspring wont be pure well anyway and, she was my first welsummer and pure bred hen.

OK guys this is a big ask but this is something i really want to know, can one of you PLEASE post a picture of a welsummer cross golden laced wyandotte (wyandotte preferable bantam roo and welsummer LF and the hen) plz because im crossing my wyandotte and welsummer late this spring and i really want to know what the chicks will look like

hi folks
i don't mean to sound Rudd are anything like that but why would you cross purebred stock or bread a Bride that does not meet the standard of the bread.
i have welsummers i don't show i don't sell hatching eggs but i still wont them to be the best i can keep them to standard i cull vary aggressively to keep the standard in all my breads and i have several .
but all are in separate pens and i do my best to keep each bread to standard i was just wandering ?

As these are beautiful birds, it's personal choice. I'm sure most breeders keep a certain breed only or keep the breed separate while breeding. Me personally am new to this and have a Welsummer roo, but I have 3 other breed pullets as well. I know I didn't your answer, but figured I would state my opinion. How I didn't offend you.

Well my mum and dad dont really like chickens so i have my small flock of 8 which i had to get myself, my mum got me my welsummer hen for my birthday, and because of that she has sentimantal value being my first welsummer and first pure bred hen full stop, before i got her only rescued battery hens, and i got my wyandotte roo and hen for my birthday just gone, seeing as im only a teenager and i dont plan on selling eggs r anything like that i decided im happy for here to cross with my wyandotte, im also going to cross my wyandotte roo with a EX-Battery hen and im going to breed with my other wyandotte hen.

and saying why would you cross a pure bred hen with a dif breed is like saying why would a english person start a family with an african person

Nickeyo, you might want to ask your question regarding crossing as a new post in the Breeds, genetics and showing section. this thread is more about discussing how to breed welsummers to the standard and improve our welsummer flocks.

I know you are young, and probably have tons of ideas for the future of your chickens. I hope you continue to enjoy them. Take this time to learn what you can about breeding and genetics and apply it when you are able to breed your own birds. I would recommend doing some research regarding color pattern and color dominance in breeding. While most of us would be aghast at the idea of trying to breed white tips, we all have the ability to experiment in our own flocks. You won't end up with an official welsummer, but I bet it will be a bird you love.

thxs, and i like the standard welsummer but i just really want t0 experiment with the white tip thing, my neighbour has quite a few show quality welsummers so i was also wondering what causes them to go white, she was fine last year but she only got the tips in her last moult

I think a lot of breeders would like to know the answer to the question. Perhaps a research experiment for you!

I hatched 5 at the end of January. (first few eggs were clear) Of this hatch, I have 2 out and 3 pips. The last egg, nothing yet, but it was probably the egg I snuck in the next day.

All 6 hatched, so 11 in the brooder. Collecting again and hoping for a broody to finish them off!
