Randy, if you take a good look at the male chicks, they have fuzzy lines on top while the girls have solid lines with eyeliners but it is not 100 percent accurate LOL!

Good luck in picking them out! Wonderful chickens they are!

Thanks for the advice.. Once I get them I will post pics and we will see how good I do lol Hope I get a few pullets lol the little ones are 6 bucks each lol

Wondering if anyone can offer some explanations about my 1 Welsummer. She lives with a Barnevelder, RIR and an Australian bred Araucana, although the Araucana is kept away from the Welsummer because of extreme bullying by the Welsummer - so my little Araucana lives alone, except for some company with the others - - through a wire separating fence in the run.

I purchased from a commercial breeder, the 3 darker and older birds - all of whom are now about 28 weeks old. The Barnevelder and RIR are laying beautifully - I get about a dozen eggs a week from them. The Barnevelder lays about 5 eggs a week, and the RIR - every day. The Welsummer has not as yet laid anything. She is by far the largest of the birds, her comb is nowhere near fully grown - in fact it remains in a small immature state. She is most definitely a 'she'. She makes a fair amount of pre-lay noise, but produces nothing.

Is there anything anyone can suggest - maybe penning her by herself, that would have her lay ? Or some kind of food or treat that would encourage laying ? She displays interest in the other two when they are laying, but I believe she is more interested in the egg than in anything else. I have had 3 eggs eaten over the 6 weeks or so that eggs have been laid, and I cannot say for sure it is she who eats them, ( probably they all have a go ) ... but she tends to ' hang around ', and sticks her beak under the laying bird from time to time. However, I do not spend my entire time watching what my hens do !!! LOL.

I have read so much here, about what wonderful layers Welsummers are and how placid and docile they can be - but have yet to see it with my girl. She'a a really beautiful hen to look at. Her 2 buddies will not tolerate her bullying them, so she doesn't try. She sure hates my little Araucana though.

Any ideas - anyone ?

A.

How old is your Welsummer? Mine really slowed down as they got older. Maybe if she is a pullet, she is close, but just not ready, or perhaps she is laying and has been eating those eggs!
you will want to track down the egg eater, as this behavior will spread.
I've only had 3 Welsummers. Two were friendly, and one was somewhat aggressive towards those low on the pecking order. One winter, she had to wear pinless peepers to prevent her from drawing blood. She's fine without them now.

I am looking for some input on a week old welsummer chick I hatched.
He appears to be a bit different then the others. It is a bit lighter, has a white spot on it's back close to the tail and the "V" on the head is not a "V".
Any ideas? I would say he is a boy but I thought the top of the head would still be in a "V" shape.
