The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Ameraucanas do seem to be broody, but my worst is the Buff Chantecler. She sat for 75 days. The first year she went broody, I had eggs in the incubator so I gave her 2 to hatch. One hatched and died, the other lived.

She didn't seem to mind raising a single chick, but when she started bringing him out in the flock, someone attacked him, leaving a gash on his chest. I had have her raise him in isolation after that, and it took him a long time to be social with other birds. We made him our flock rooster, and he still worships the Buff Chantecler.

Because of that experience, I prefer non-broody breeds, and hatch and raise the chicks myself. I'm glad to hear that Welsummers don't sit so often. I would love to see a hen raise a little flock, but I would be worried sick about others killing the chicks. I'm not sure how people pull that off.

I got a couple Welsummer chicks the other day believed to be around 4-5 weeks old. Any idea on gender? It was hard to get pictures today with snow falling outside. I didnt want to keep the coop door open too long.

Thats what I was leaning towards. Searching online about the "makeup" around the eyes one is substantially darker then the other.
Yup that's what it looks like to me. Although if they are 4-5 weeks with my wellie chicks I can usually see more comb on the roos than yours have. So either they are both pullets or maybe younger than 4-5 weeks. Or a roo with a small comb. Nice looking chicks though.

Ill have to keep an eye on them. They seemed to be feathered out and have been moved to my grow out coop and off of heat lamp. I got them from a guy in Richmond, VA. I believe he gets a lot of desired breeds hatching eggs online and then hatches and sells them local. Im not sure which lines these are from and exact age but I want to say they were around 4 weeks old. I got a couple different breeds from him at different ages.

Take a look at their chests. If they have only salmon feathers, they're pullets. If they have black feathers coming in, they're roos.

I also say the one on the left is a roo. I had one of each too. They were hatched early last May. The roo is awful. Mean and nasty to me, but my husband and kids he doesn't bother with. I'm ready to put him in the pot. He's beautiful and even dances for his girls, but I can't even get in the coop to take care of them during day hours, and when he's out and about, he'll sneak up behind me and let me have it. His nubs are now now turning into claws and those spurs are awful. He got me in the hand the other day when I reached through the nest box to replace their waterer. I've tried everything to make him nice and it's just not working. I can't even bend down to pick him up as he'll just attack me. :(
