The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I also say the one on the left is a roo.  I had one of each too.  They were hatched early last May.  The roo is awful.  Mean and nasty to me, but my husband and kids he doesn't bother with.  I'm ready to put him in the pot.  He's beautiful and even dances for his girls, but I can't even get in the coop to take care of them during day hours, and when he's out and about, he'll sneak up behind me and let me have it.  His nubs are now now turning into claws and those spurs are awful.  He got me in the hand the other day when I reached through the nest box to replace their waterer.  I've tried everything to make him nice and it's just not working.  I can't even bend down to pick him up as he'll just attack me.  :(

That sounds awful! I'd get rid of him in a hurry.

I have a Basque rooster that is mostly nice, but very high energy. Every once in a while he'll come up behind me and bite me on the leg. I pin him to the ground and then carry him around, holding his head down for a bit. That usually buys me another couple weeks of niceness, before I have to repeat.

Sorry to hear that, personally we don't keep any roos that are mean. Until you decide what you are going to do with him carry a broom and never take an eye off him.

Just put 11 Welsummer eggs in the incubator, hoping we will get some chicks in 21 days

We need another cockeral or 2 for sure- our main rooster is coming up on 3 years old and has a broken toe so he gets marked down when DD shows him at fair.

You guys crack me up! I definitely am thinking about crock potting him! My bestie is all into the culling so if he and I can figure out when to do it, I'd love to learn how. That way, we can get some meat birds and do it all ourselves. His only saving grace is he's only after me and not the kids. My daughter adores him and he dances for her. :) He has now talken to hopping up the steps of our deck and stalking me through the sliding door! I have nightmares about him!! hahaha

Got our 2nd Welsummer egg today! (left) and the 1st one is on the right. She skipped 2 days between them. It definitely looks to be afew shades darker than the first one and both have fine dark speckles. Do new layers generally start light and darken over time? The first egg had blood on it, but today's did not, so hoping all her pipes got cleaned out and she's ready to roll. They both are generally close to the color of our Barred Rock's eggs at this point. Hope they darken a bit as time goes on.

Congrats on the eggs!

I think it depends on each chicken as to what color the eggs will be, we have some eggs that have very fine speckles all over and it gives it a darker looking color.
