The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My new babies! So stinkin cute!

Oh man, I think me sees a whole lot of girls there. How did you do that?

Hey Brad, I am pretty sure mine is a boy now. Didn't take long for that comb to look even more like a boys..it's thick, and getting big! I need another girl. My older girl is now squatting with me just standing over her..I used to catch her and get her to squat...come on already Phoenix!

Here are my Welsummer girls. For my first time at picking out chicks I'm very pleased so far.

Thank you all for you advice, pictures, and posts to help me get started.

My husband was able to find what he was looking for from a breeder in S AL. He purchased two hens and a rooster that had a comb injured in a fight. Let me know how he did...

Search sexing for welsummers. The pullets have a dark defined V on the top of their head and also have defined eyeliner. The cockerels are more washy less defined in those areas.
I've looked into it a little. I went back to the store today and had a look at the chicks, and I can see the differences. How accurate is this type of sexing? These chicks would be from a hatchery, not a breeder. I read that this doesn't work as well on hatchery chicks. Is that true? Also, are there other chicks that look like Welsummers? They have a bin of misc. chicks and it looks like there could are Welsummers in there, but maybe they could be something else ? The misc, chick bin is already sexed as pullets, and they are cheaper than buying a specific breed. I appreciate any help.

With my chicks it has always been 100%. You can tell males from females super easy. The above pic shows male (bottom right) no eye liner and lighter more blurry V on top of the head. Other 3 are female with eye liner and darker more defined V on top of the head. There are other breeds that have the "chipmunk" look to them like the welsummer does. It might be a little difficult to pick out just welsummers from a bin full of mixed up breeds if several others who have the chipmunk stripes too. Welsummer chicks should have bright yellow shanks (legs) clean legged (no feathers on them) no beard muffs (fluffy fat cheeks). I have owned hatchery Welsummers and they looked at hatch the same as those I have today. I have also heard people say this of hatchery welsummers but in my experience I have not found this to be true. Could be for others I suppose though.

All of these are female. See the eye liner? You can see the darker V of the top right chick in this pic.

Thank you so much! I'll go back to the store tomorrow and pick a few out. (If there are any left) I may also try one from the misc. bin just to see what it turns out to be.

Your chicks are adorable by the way! Is there a difference in the wing feathers? The males wings in your photo look more barred than the females. Is that something else to look for?
