The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Yes he does! Even he isn't crazy about chickens but he knows it is important. But this time around, drop my girls off but picking up a Welsummer roo and Silver Duckwing Welsummer Bantams, not for me but for our friend.

Hubby is driving almost all night tonight. Left Fay's place. He is probably north of Lexington, KY somewhere, heading to Cinnicinati.

It was great seeing your husband again! Hope all the chickens make it back to you ok - the rooster was not happy lol. The three bantams seemed ok with it though. Your hens are doing great and I hope to start breeding them this coming weekend. then I can get caught up on some of my egg orders too!

my bantams are silver duckwing - I'm assuming your looking for standard color bantams. Ewesheep probably knows of someone that has some. I do know that Kummer Poultry has them

Love the mama and baby pictures. Do the Welsummers go broody often? I just didn't think of them going broody. I have found a couple of LF breeds that do, but I hadn't heard that the Welsummers do. I know that Wyondottes do. It was one of those that got me hooked on incubating. She laterally flew the coop when the eggs started pipping and she could hear the babies. Glad I had bought a back up bator as someone had suggested. Well, that's all she wrote. I love hatching. I like having my own chicks, and not having to worry about getting a sick hen or a hen that is well looking but a carrier of something. My girls are healthy..knock on wood.

I've only had 1 other go broody years ago. Welsummers in general don't very often. She was acting like she wanted to so I put a couple dummy eggs under her. She sat on those for 2 days straight so I thought, why not? I do have incubators if she quits early. So I put 10 eggs under her. I didn't really have another coop free to move her to so I marked those eggs so I could check to see if others had laid in her nest because there's 15 other hens in that coop. Sure enough a couple times when she got out to eat/drink someone snuck in there and laid an egg. I checked under her everyday just to make sure. She's very gentle, didn't mind at all. But as I was afraid the others might break/crack one the eggs I put under her by laying their own in that nest, sure enough they did crack one around day 14. So I ended up with 9 and she hatched them all. I was pleasantly surprised. I freed up a coop and moved her and the chicks into it. Not sure if this will be a regular thing with her or not but I would defiantly let her brood again if she takes the notion.

Hoping to find a breeder for Welsummers. I am in east-central Kansas and so would either need a breeder withing driving distance or willing to ship. Really looking for chicks at this time as incubation attempts have not gone so well. Thanks so much ahead of time!

Thanks! This particular hen was 1 year old in February.

Yes, they are all settling in nicely. The roo was handsome! Yes he was NOT happy being in the rabbit hutch but he will have to stay in quarantine until he goes to Trisha.

The bantams are doing well! I had to get some chick feed for them, a small bag, no big deal! They are twittering and hopping around, checking things out.

I hope you can get your egg orders out...nothing worse having a bunch of disappointed customers wanting some Welsummer eggs or chicks! We can not fail them!
