The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Too funny! I have one hen that continues to lay long shaped eggs. She is an EE. The two brown eggs were the new ones, the speckled one from a welsummer and the one on the right from a BO. The others are from my year old hens, so they've had some time to get to that size

. The two pullet eggs were perfect sized to fry up and put on top of my halved english muffin!
you no i have 4 older birds .2 red sex links and 2 i beleave are comets ..anyways, they only laid one or 2 eggs that were small before they started laying a large egg ..my wellies eggs are starting to get a little bigger but its been a few weeks now , i would have thought they would be of normal size by now ..they are getting a little bigger ..just not as big as i would have hoped for by now ..

Thanks for the information Why egger. I have stopped giving them bread which was what I gave them most of for a treat other then today when they got out of the fence and I had to coax them back in with it. I'll definitely take your advice.

Well, my three welsummer pullets are now 20 weeks old, I still think they are quite far away from laying though.

You guys might remember I was questioning the purity of one of my wellies, she looked pure as a day old, but soon developed a black coloured head. Well she's all grown up now, and i'm wanting some second opinions on her

She's a tad larger than the other Welsummers... I'm thinking if she is a cross it could be Barnevelder perhaps?

You can see she's got black behind her comb, and a lot of black on her neck too.

She's also got black tips on some of the feathers on her back, my other two wellies don't have this.

Standing next to one of my other Welsummers. You can see how much more black she has on her neck.

And one of my other Welsummer pullets, she's so pretty!! They've grown up so nicely!
Yes most certainly a Barnvelder crossed over Welsummer. A few breeders attempted to cross Welsummers over Barnvelders.......indeed, it was a BAD idea.

Other than that, enjoy them as egg laying flock!

I believe this situation would have been an accident, the breeder I got them from aims for pure breeds, but accidents happen... they also gave me an Australorp X Cochin that was an accident, lol.

She really did look pure as a day old though, I should probably let the breeder know what happened.

Why do you say it was a bad idea to cross them? Were they doing it to attempt to improve Welsummers? or just make a cool looking cross breed?

i was talking to rancher[ i think thats who it was..lol ] on the ny thread and we both had noticed a decline in eggs when we gave high amounts of carbs like bread ..i havent noticed a drop in eggs with all the tomatoes i give them tho ..alot of my new girls have just started to lay ..but i stopped giving treats and now it seems like everyones back on track here ..some breeds do mature slower then others...

i really hope this works for ya ..
