The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Welsummer roo's are a different colour to the hens. Some show these colours earlier than others though. Look for black feathers forming on his chest area, and a deep red colour on his back. Also keep an eye out for saddle and hackle feathers. Crowing varies, you can never be sure when they'll start crowing. I've heard of roosters crowing at 8 weeks old, but mine didn't crow until around 3-4 months old.

mine started around 14 weeks ..he now crows when ever there is a car he doesnt know ..we live on the end of a deadend road and we get alot of cars turning around in our driveway..he also crows when ever the kids go by on their motor bikes ..hes very alamed by strangers and is a very good watch dog ..lol..

i got rid of 2 nice speckled sussexs roo's last yr because i worried about the neighbors and wouldnt ya know once they were gone the neighbors all wanted to know what happen to the roo's ..and that they enjoyed hearing them crow ..so you may want to talk to your neighbors before sending him away ..
i think older folks tend to enjoy them more ..i think it reminds them of days gone by and a little of their childhood comes back to when everyone raised birds ..

The neighbour we're friendly with doesnt mind, they even use his garden to catch bugs from time to time. The next neighbour has said the chickens are fine as he only hears the egg song but has already voiced concerns of us having a roo. I have pre warned him I believe its a roo (yes he does have black on his chest which is my roo clue, my experienced grandfather has also said he looks like a roo) so to tell me if he hears him crow and I can rehome faster. He's very pretty and is my only chick from my first hatch. So it'll be a shame to see him go. But we only rent too so dont want to risk our landlord getting complaints and us having to move! Thanks again all for your help!

This girl is Reba, so far she's been the most dominant hen in my coop until recently when I got a rooster and the whole pecking order changed. She has a beautiful green sheen that you can see in the sunlight :) I was wondering if that's common for this breed? My other Welsummer doesn't have it at all.

This is Loretta, my other Welsummer that is BEAUTIFUL but doesn't have the same sheen as her sister.

These girls are about four months old now, I'm excited for chocolate eggs!

Sorry for the poor quality of photos, these girls do not like to stand still for photos.

Welsummers can crow anytime they want to. I have this one that crowed at 1 DAY old.

Also, Welsummers do not lay chocolate colored eggs. Terra cotta is the desired color for the breed. (clay pot colored)

funny seeing them react to the roo crowing in the back ground..lol..i cant wait to start hatching my own ..next spring perhaps ..

Well, my three welsummer pullets are now 20 weeks old, I still think they are quite far away from laying though.

You guys might remember I was questioning the purity of one of my wellies, she looked pure as a day old, but soon developed a black coloured head. Well she's all grown up now, and i'm wanting some second opinions on her

She's a tad larger than the other Welsummers... I'm thinking if she is a cross it could be Barnevelder perhaps?

You can see she's got black behind her comb, and a lot of black on her neck too.

She's also got black tips on some of the feathers on her back, my other two wellies don't have this.

Standing next to one of my other Welsummers. You can see how much more black she has on her neck.

And one of my other Welsummer pullets, she's so pretty!! They've grown up so nicely!

Do your Welsummers sound like the other chickens? Mine has a funny voice. Kind of a highpitched voice. I can always her tell her when she is hidden in the garden just by her voice. She was 28 weeks old yesterday and I haven't seen an egg from her yet. I'm really at the point where I'm ready to start thinning out chickens. I have several around that age that aren't laying yet. I think 7 months is long enough to wait. My Welsummer looks like yours that have no black. When I first got here I didn't think she was pretty at all but she has come a long way and is pretty now.

I can tell all my girls apart by their voices :)

I'm getting tired of my freeloaders and waiting on them. Some of them are looking really good.
