The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Well, I'm wondering why my Wells hasn't lain an egg yet also. She will be 26 weeks old on sunday. I've had her since she was 4 weeks old. Totally frustrated waiting on her. Patience is not one of my virtues.

This is a slow-maturing breed; man heritage breeds are. I think it's not uncommon for Wellies to start laying at 30 weeks.

There was a person giving a review and saying her Welsummer laid an egg at 4 months old. She said it was a big bird. I either have the wrong bird or mine is an exception. The woman I got her from said she is not a bantam. She is not very big. Not even two pounds. This person said they get really big. Oh well!

what kind of feed are you giving them ..mine started laying at about 22 weeks ..mine are not real big birds either ..and the eggs i am getting are not much bigger then a quarter..i was told they would get bigger in time ..my wyandottes are not laying at all yet and they are the same age as the wellies ..but they are a slow maturing breed..so its exspected from them ..

Why egger, I'm giving them layer feed. I give them scraps and also let them free range. Maybe I just have slow chickens. I have New Hampshires that are going to be 26 weeks Sunday and only two of them are laying, one at 23 weeks and at 24 weeks. I read that Welsummers are slow to mature. Mine was so little for a long time and still isn't big.

They are not brown leghorns. No white earlobes, they are sweet natured, and are laying brown speckled eggs

They are pretty Welsummers just a little more comb then normal. I really love the color of my Welsummer eggs and recently crossed them to get an olive egger. WOW, nice eggs!

Mine take a while before they lay and then they lay forever. Once in a while a determined broody

its funny how some breeds can take so much longer to get things going ..i no i ran a light all last winter to keep them laying..i started to cut the light back but then some of these girls are not all laying yet and the lack of light might cause them to take even longer to start laying ..lol..i hope that made sense..anyhow i am leaving the light on again this yr ..but come spring the lights are going out ..lol

heres a couple pics of my wellies....

levon here is looking pretty studley or so he thinks ..lol he really is tho with 21 girls to tend too..hes the man ..lol

hard to get good pics of these guys as they are always on the move ..lol
these girls are very pretty as well ..they are at the bottom of the pecking order tho and sometimes get picked on ..not so much anymore but once in awhile they get chased around the run or coop..

the eggs are small right now but very tasty and the shells are pretty..

levon has grown in to a very nice roo..hes never come at me but one time ..and now we have an understanding ...its nice watching him usher in the girls to eat in sets of 4 ..when one group is done he moves the next bunch in ..i see him call the ladys over for treats and he waites to eat last ..hes turn into a real good boy ..

i tried to get a good pic of his comb and waddle ..its beuatiful.. i wished i could have gotten a better pic..i no this winter i'll be having to vasilean it up good to prevent frostbite..that is one task i am not looking forward to ..altho hes a very nice , he still hates to be caught and held ..lol

heres a little better pic of his comb..and if you click on the pic it will blow it up bigger..
