The Welsummer Thread!!!!

How ld was your Welsummer when she started laying and how often? I have one that I don't think is ever going to lay.She is 26 weeks old.
they started laying around 22 weeks.. just 2 birds at first.then i think the others started with in a week or 2 of that also ..i have 5 wellie hens ..and they only lay about 4 to 5 times a week .."i think"..lol..i really should write it down ..i have a couple 18 packs of eggs right now from them ..altho the numbers have gone up a little the last week or so ..i think they are getting a little bigger as well ..the eggs that is ..haha

Well, I must be stuck with slow moving chickens. I have N.H. chickens that are same age as the Wellie and out of four of them 2 are laying. Two orpingtons that are old enough and aren't laying yet. It's getting frustrating. Ten chickens all the same age approximately with the exception of one and 3 that are laying. The people that sold me the Buff orpington said she was laying and I have had her since July 29th and not one egg. If I buy anymore pullets that are supposedly laying I will definitely look at their combs and wattles. Thanks for the info. Your roo is beautiful!

I hate to burst your bubble. I keep thinking the same about my Welsummer. She was 27 weeks old yesterday. I put her in an ad for sale and had a couple of calls but no sale. I have changed my mind though. I looked on Google and BYC to see what her eggs would look like and decided to keep her.
They are really pretty, unique. I think they lay eggs at a different rate.

27 weeks eems kind of along time ..maybe she has something wrong with her ..have you tried looking up what kinds of things may delay laying ..not sure how you would word it to look it up but i would start by googling what kinds of things delay hens from laying ..

..lol

they do lay the prettyest terracotta eggs with speckles..heres my first egg i got from one ..i now have 2 ,18 packs of their eggs ..i have given some away atleast that many..they are still small but are starting to get bigger..

you can see the diffrents in size and color from my other birds..and thats not even the best looking egg i've gotten ..if you want really dark eggs get a marron..they lay the darkest eggs i beleave..but the wellies eggs are very tasty ..and folks love the colors when you show them ..its nice to have folks who buy them ask questions and be able to exsplain to them the diffrents in the egg colors andf how diffeent breeds lay the diffrent colors ..i just hope with time mine start to lay bigger eggs ..mine i would class as a sm egg ..but my other girls lay a large egg to extra large..and i have 5 wellie hens and they seem to be getting in to the groove of things as they have laid just about every day this last week or so ..they may miss a day but not many ..i am very happy with this breed and plan on raising more from my own eggs next yr ..

My two newest Wellie gals were hatched March 15, and both started laying on September 15.
That is about average for my birds here.

Hi all, my welsummer chick is 10 weeks old and certain its a roo...but wondering when he could possibly start crowing? I want to rehome him before he annoys my neighbours!
