The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Can someone give me info on these eggs? The one on left and one in missile were laid by same bird. The one on right is a RSL for comparison. My wellie is a full sized bird, why does she lay bantam sized eggs? She's been laying for almost a year now, I doubt it will fix. Also, what is the correct wellie egg color? Thanks!

Welsummers should lay terra cotta colored eggs. (clay pot) Yours look a bit pale, but if she's at the end of her lay cycle for a molt, they can be more pale than in the spring.

just woundering if any of you wash your eggs ..i dont ..but i have seen pics from a few folksd on here and some look like they had been washed ..and when i say washed i mean in water or wiped with damp cloths ..just woundering thanks ..

I do not wash my eggs unless they are super dirty, which is rare. If they are super dirty they may become a dog or chicken snack. I might gently wipe a smudge off, but normally all of my eggs go from coop to a basket in the kitchen to a carton to the fridge. I do rinse my eggs under warm water and pat dry right before I use them.

Not sure if there is a right way or a wrong way, but this way works for me :)

I store my eggs unwashed, as they keep longer that way. Newest eggs are on my counter, older eggs in the fridge. I rarely have a very dirty egg, but if I do, it's usually added to the dogs food.

Washing eggs with water removes the protective layer from them which can allow for bacteria to enter the egg if not used soon.

Because I sell my eggs I never wash them with water, and any that get water on them for some reason will become dog food. Most of my eggs are pretty clean, but any with a bit of muck on them get sanded with a very fine sanding block. This is the method most of the farmers around my area use, and it works great. But when I get really really dirty eggs i'll either give them straight to the dogs or ferrets, or boil them up and feed them back to the chooks.

My eggs are always pretty clean. I don't wash them. I wash them before I use them actually if I think about it.
