The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I've got some 4 week old BCM/Wellie x chicks and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with sexing these? I have a couple I think are boys that clearly have copper hackles (way before my BCM cockerels showed any). I'd love to see pics if you have them.

hi, all:

i'm looking for welsummer day olds (i'm also looking for araucana and dorkings) - - i would like the darkest eggs possible. does anyone know of someone who sells day olds?

@magdelaine I would love to see pics of your Wellie x Marans. I have 5 (9-week) old Marans (I think). I got them as 4 week olds and at that time she thought that 2 of them were crosses like yours. She has all Marans except for one Wellie hen and she thought she set some of her eggs by mistake. A few weeks later she put the hens into individual quarters to see which eggs they were laying and then said the Wellie laid a much lighter egg than her Marans. So, all five of mine may be Marans after all. Would love to see what yours look like at 4 weeks to help me know for sure.

Jumping in to this thread to introduce my 2 new girls Ginger and Cinnamon (they are a week old here, taken last week):

@imtrying Whitmore Farms has nice birds, but you have to place a large order - 25 I think (which can be split amongst the breeds they raise). Where are you located? I haven't looked yet, but there may be a Welsummer club with a link to breeders. Or, if you don't plan on breeding and don't mind hatchery stock you can try someone like My Pet Chicken who sell in much smaller quantities. Of course, someone here may chime in if they have any to sell.

It would help if you would tell us where you are located (maybe add it to your profile so it shows up in all your posts). I hatch Welsummers from Whitmore Farm stock, but I don't ship them.

Hey guys, i am new to welsummers. I purchased fertile eggs and had a good hatch. I have one chick however who is much lighter than the others. Is this normal?

here is the light one

and for comparison, top to bottom welsummer, ee, the light welsummer, rir, and another welsummer

That's a mix of some sort. Looks like they have more than wellies on that farm.

Thanks for the response. They were "supposed" to be pure but i know she also has lemon cuckoo orpingtons and Appenzeller Spitzhauben's in other pens so i wonder if a lemon cuckoo is mixed in. Either way i cant wait to see how it matures!
