The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Quote:
"I" did not inbreed them too much, that was how they hatched out. last year I got 30 eggs from someone, 15 hatched and out of that only 6 had good feet. So, I hatched out some of their babies and used a different line to cross them with and ended up with more bad feet. So then I crossed them with Wellies and had a GREAT hatch and all had good feet.

Really glad to see this thread. I have had some questions on my Welsummers for a couple months, but no time to get on here.

I purchased some expensive chicks out of Houston area that were suppose to Lowel Barber lines. They are gorgeous birds so far as my eyes can tell..... mind you I am new to chickens. They didn't start laying until 7 months of age and are at present one year old. Their eggs were so dark up until I put them in their own coop just about a month ago. Now they have seemed to lighten by like 2 or 3 shades. I fed them scratch and Flockraiser before, but have since put them on just flockraiser...then tried back on Layena to see if there was any change. Still light eggs. I am going to add back in the corn I think and see if it helps. The other major factor is that they do not get a chance to get out and free range. I wanted to hatch out more and breed true, but am hesitant because of egg color now. So maybe you experts can give me some advice on these guys in both appearance and egg color...as to why it changed.

By far these guys are the most laid back roosters we have. They are my son's flock and he adores them. They are not necessarily the friendliest I have (Speckled Sussex top that), but they are easy to get along with. My son likes the smaller rooster best and named him Walle. He came from a different breeder and I hatched him from a dark egg. The hens and other roo came as chicks from Houston.

Here they are...First the bigger Rooster he named Wellington...

And then the smaller rooster I hatched....he named Wall E.....(I see lots of red in the breast..

And then two of the three hens....

I easily get 2 to 3 eggs a day from them.

So don't be too brutal

CountryMom, did you get your eggs from TinkerToyYorki???????? Yes she did have those Welsummers but I can not verify if they are directly from Lowell Barber. Only two breeders I know of have the direct flock/lines from Barber. I do not know enought about this breeder but she used to be on here a few years ago.

I am new to the chicken scene....So, I don't know much about telling a roo from hen. Here are my two wellsummer's , they are very pretty. They are 13 weeks old. I am hoping that one of them is a hen. I thought I would share some pics of them!

Yes....and I have since heard some not so nice things. I won't repeat and I don't know if the upset parties are honest or if she was. The reports of bad birds were not of Welsummers (she has a TON of birds of all kinds of breeds.) She told me she hatched eggs from someone in Florida that had that line. So not sure if they are really from there. I have not seen her on here, but did long ago when I visited the other older BYC.

The other roo was from another BYC and I did have that egg to see it was extremely dark. He is shorter in stature and has more red in his breast, but by far the sweeter of the two roos. Even with the red breast I cannot say I am disappointed with him.
