The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Someone from Florida.........my big fat guess would be the one and only Ray Valentine which he sold them out a few years ago. He was on the other BYC for a very short time and someone did confront him about the validity of his Welsummers' breeder's origin (Lowell Barber lines) and there were too many faults coming out of his stock and the eggs were not as terra cotta as it should be. So Mr Valentine sold all of his Welsummers to focus on his Marans. Your roo from Yorki is nice but too Leghorn-y in shape, a little narrow. The other one Wall E looks pretty good despite of too much red in his chest feathers. Both roos are lovely to look at, good color and the shine from their feathers tells me that you have done well!

I did remember the "flak" that yorki had with BYC and yes it was not pleasant but missed her "exit" drama story. I was disappointed to hear about her stock and I have not had the chance to look into her stock.

Well give one away or sell him. If you only have two hens, better settle with one roo with them. Put your spare roo in the bachelor pen.

All of them have been together since they were a week old. How would it be if they all just stayed together? They all get along right now!

If they are not overly agressive with the pullets, or bare backs, then I am sure they will be ok. However be on the look out when they do approach "manhood".

Thanks for the info EweSheep .... I suspected they weren't that great, but hoped they were at least in the ball park of half way decent. Sadly they are for my son who is only 8 so I guess they are here to stay.

WHAAAT! Nobody's talkin' Wellies! Geeeeeshh!

Well I've got a question.......SOP question. I noticed that the the US standard doesn't mention anything about feathering in between the toes on Wellies.....why is that or did I just miss it?

The reason I bring this up is because someone I know at the local feed store told me that a guy was in and asked if they knew of any Welsummer breeders in this area, knowing me as well as they all do, they gave him my number. He called and asked me if I could take a look at his birds and give him my opinion. So, when I was in that town the other day I stopped by to see his birds and talk with him. When I noticed all of his birds were heavily feathered in between the toes with some sparse feathering on the shanks as well and then mentioned something about it....he flipped out and told me I didn't know what I was talking about. Well, I may not know what I am always talking about... that I agree with, but, wether or not they should be feathered I definately know about. I was only there to give him my opinion as he asked me too...geesh. I suggested that he do some more research on this breed of bird if he is trying to sell them as show quality as he states in his advertising, boy howdy, that went over like a ton of bricks, I didn't say anything more to him except to bid him a good day and thanked him for asking me for my opinion and wished him luck. My motto is "Don't ask if you don't want to know!"


Anyway back to my original question.....any takers?

I am no expert, but when I asked before on my birds that was a question someone asked me. I guess that feather leg shanks are a throw back to some old gene? Someone will correct me if I am wrong I am sure. Anyhow, all I have read say that they are what you cull out. It would have me wondering if they are laced with a throw back gene or if they were crossed somewhere with a feather legged Marans.

The other thing asked was if any of my birds have white in their wings....and that one is a no answer also.

Like I said, I am NO EXPERT on Welsummers.

Feathers between the toes - or Stubs as they are called - is a DQ.

Stubs is a common problem with hatchery birds. In fact, my experience has been that the vast majority of hatchery Welsummers will have stubs.

With regard to your comments about the guy flipping out on you, what in the world possesses someone to come over and ask for counsel and then flip out when it is received? Just the fact that he had to ask you to take a look at his birds says something. Not that I wouldn't or don't do that because I do. In fact, I had my Barnevelder and Welsummer breeder over last Friday and asked him to look over my birds. He's got a much keener eye than I do with regard to certain things and when he said to cull this bird or that bird, it was marked right there for the stewpot.

What is most disturbing to me about your post is that you said this guy is advertising his birds as SQ?????? Please send me a personal email with his information as I want to steer clear of any birds from him or that came from him. Not that I think I'll ever be needing any Welsummers from other than my original source breeders but if he does this with Welsummers, it's likely he does it with other breeds too.
