I love the dark eggs with speckles. Where do I find quality chicks for these?

Mr Shaw is gone now...Estes Hatchery is the one who got his flock. Their prices per chick is somewhere higher than average hatchery Welsummers. Opa can probably give you a better representive of Shaw's birds.

Hi Everyone!

Well I think that the race is over......8 babies...4 girls and 4 boys...#9 "I-pip" short for "I pip the wrong way" is still hanging in there ...time will tell, but nature will decide.
Not as well as I hoped for, but I have a staggered hatch going right now, 8 more are in lock down set to hatch on Tuesday and 4 are expected Friday. We'll see!

if it has an eyeliner, its a girl. If none or faded, its a boy.

On top of heads, a real defined stripes, its a girl, if faded, its a boy.

I see maybe 4-5 girls and rest of them are boys.

In some certain bloodlines, the sex can be told right then and there while others do not. So it is not 100% fool proof method. I think pure Lowell Barber lines are the ones you can tell right off when they get dried off.

How can you tell male from female? I know there is a way with striped babies, but I can't remember.

The females have a more defined "V" and the boys are muted. Girls also can and in my experience have very nice defined "eyeliner"
In this photo the girl is on the left and boy is on the right. Using this method has always proven to be accurate for me.

Yep!

However for ME, it does not always come out that way!

It is crossed Calicowoods and Lowell Barber so it could be anything. Even with my bantams, I had some disentive Y's but they ended up as males and the females goes either way. I believe I had four females and three males but it came out two females and four males with one lost before he matured. So with the new roo, I hope the eggs will be hatched out 80% females...LOL by a LONG shot!

This year I am going to get some PURE lines and some others that are from different sources but all of them trace back to Barber or Netland or other breeders and hopefully I would be able to sex them accordingly. Wish me luck on that one!
