The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Okay.........I am new to chickens and am placing my order soon - I couldn't decide on my 4th breed -
- and you all made my decision for me! I am adding Wellies to my order!
Sounds like they have the personality I want and they are
GORGEOUS!!!

Here are my 2 Welsummers, Big Daddy & Wellie. They're both 8 months old, and I hatched them from eggs I bought at a BYC Swap. Big Daddy is the alpha roo for my laying flock; somehow, he lost the first point on his comb when he was a tiny chick. We live in town, so he spends the night in the garage on his roost, and I take him out every morning to let him be with his girls (they adore him!). He knows the drill, so I never have a problem carrying him around. Wellie just started laying those beautiful terra cotta eggs, and she faithfully gives me one a day!

After going through this thread I want to try my had with Wellies again

I had a gorgeous trio last summer. Unfortunately a fox liked them too since she invited them over for dinner.

This year I am closing down the take out window so there will be no more free lunches.

Now I just have to patient and wait for warmer weather so eggs can be shipped. That and find a breeder who ships eggs.

To anyone who might be interested, I would like to let folks know that my original breeder for Welsummers has decided to start openly selling Welsummer (and other breeds) hatching eggs. As a reminder, my friend was one of the original five breeders who met at the APA National Show in 1991 and got both the Welsummer and Barnevelders accepted into the APA that year.

Anyone who would like top quality eggs that are from show quality and show winning birds can feel free to email me and I can put you in touch with him. I can personally vouch for his birds and eggs. If you want to know what his eggs look like you can see a perfect representation of them on my website because I got my stock from him. My Champion Continental Cockerel this year came from his lineage. There are pictures of my birds on my website, elsewhere in this thread (I think), and under the "Welsummer Photo Contest" thread on BYC as well.

I am not openly advertising him by name here because of an incident that happened on BYC some time ago where one person had a single bad experience with a very reputable breeder and started blasting him publicly which drove him completely underground. My friend is a somewhat elderly gentleman - and I emphasize "Gentleman" - and I would be crushed if some jerk were to treat him badly and do something similar to him.

So, if you are serious about getting good Welsummer stock, about taking care of this breed, about dealing with others in a proper way, and about not blabbing about him to every other Joe on the street, then you can email me and I can put you in touch with him. I'm not trying to play middle man here and I get nothing out of doing this other than knowing that my friendship will stay intact and he'll be treated right.

God Bless,
