Oh yes it is very contagious....LOL....and it is one of those illnesses that show signs and symptoms for years.....I just can't shake it!!!! My poor doctor doesn't know how to treat me for it!

I hatched 7 welsummers (eggs from POPPAJO), and they are about 7 weeks old now. At what point will I be able to tell if they're boys or girls? To me they still all look about the same, other than 1 or 2 that are a bit smaller than the others. I'm really hoping at least some of them are girls, but I LOVE all my roosters too, so either way it's fine, I'm just curious really since I'd like to get some nice dark brown eggs.

Edited to add: Well, I just sat in there with them awhile longer and now I can see a slight difference in coloration and comb-size for the big versus the small ones. I'm guessing it's maybe 2 girls and 5 boys, but I'm wondering how long until they will be very obviously different in coloration. The ones I'm thinking are boys have more black feathers than the girls, but it's just still hard for me to tell for sure.

Look at their breasts. Normally the boys will have black on the breast, usually starting on the outside and working in toward the center. The girls will have brown breasts.

You could also post pictures, and get expert opinions.

I thought it was supposed to be by looking for the 'eye-liner' and defined V-shape on pullet, and lack thereof on cockerels...am I wrong?

I loved their eggs, thought that they were beautiful, but they were the most light sensitive chickens I ever owned.

I don't use supplemental light and living this far north they refused to lay 6+ months of the year.

Oh dear! I live at 45 degrees north...can I expect non-layers for 6 months/year? (I may have to re-think the breed to get)
