The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I know you were not asking me, but mine came from Estes Hatchery. The reason for this is that I had heard that Estes had bought a very nice Welsummer flock from someone who got old and couldn't keep them any more.

I cannot remember his name, though, but I'll bet that others on this list would remember.

I thought I would post a few pictures from this morning of our Wellsummer Rooster.

Looks like he may need a napkin after the morning oatmeal!

It is still in single digits here, so our hens are not layig hardly at all. Any of you fellow welsummer owners in the warmer climates getting eggs? I would love to see some egg photos.

Do they have a big minimum order? I'm just looking for a couple/few girls. I was going to get some faverolles too- and I've heard pretty decent stuff about Meyer's favs. Don't know how their wellie are though.

Lovely roo Mountain Sunshine! I hope mine end up like that!

I live in the Pacific Northwest where it is rainy, gray and gloomy for many months out of the year. My breeding pen suffered a horrible dog attack not too long ago, my remaining Wellie girl that survived out of that pen is laying every other day with out a light and has layed all through the winter so far. I tossed one of her best sisters from the laying coop back in with her shortly after the attack so her sister wouldn't be alone and she is laying just as well.

Here are some of their eggs in the 'bator, the Wellie eggs are on the left also the 2 in the bottom right hand corner and the others are Marans and some future Olive Egger.

You know, I don't remember about their minimum order. I don't think so, though.

I am getting 15 chicks from Cackle next month, not Wellies, though, 10 Golden Comets and 5 EE's. Pullets. Just for the eggs.

Our weather is down in the single digits also, and the hens are laying well. Since I cleared out most of the roosters, they are doing better, without all that harassment, and we don't have a lot of light in there, but we do have a light bulb that is on in the evening so that we can see to take care of them, and maybe that helps.

Here are my wellies, they are still young, hatched in September. No the best quality pictures, but its been either too cold or too wet to get out there and take some good ones

Great thread, beautiful birds everyone.
I cant wait till better weather to take new pictures and to start hatching again.

Yes, we do love all the pictures!

I never get tired of looking at Welsummer pics. I meant to take some new ones before our current foot of snow fell, but it didn't happen. Maybe next week...

My Welsummer pullets are 42 weeks, and I still haven't seen eggs from them. It is comforting to hear from someone else that their Welsummers are so light sensitive- I have never had pullets take so long to lay, and I have never had to wait until spring to see an egg from a pullet hatched the previous spring! I am itching to see some of those dark brown eggs! Usually my hens start up again in late February, but by then my Welsummers will be nearly 50 weeks!
