Thanks!

So guess what......

I found one of my almost 4.5 month old Wellie pullets scratching around in the nest box yesterday, she is sooooo funny, then she would hop down, run outside, pace the fence, cluck cluck cluck.....run back into the coop hop up in the nest box, scratch scratch scratch, cluck cluck cluck, then back out to the fence. She's working sumpin' out!

Your gonna get an egg!!!!! Many of my hens have started laying that way. It's too funny to watch, and watch where you step when you go in the run, some of them just don't make it back to the coop.

I have a question on the bantams' hatching time. I have some large and small Welsummer eggs on lock down, one large one has pipped..due tomorrow...I had heard that bantams can take longer "most" of the time?
Just wondering, don't want to get over worried if not even one of the six aren't out when all of the large ones are. My first bantam baby ever! I hear the Welsummers' are very hardy, so hoping the little bantys are also.
Thanks!

I have a Welsummer that just started laying. I've collected three eggs from her so far, and all are very small (like bantam-sized), and slightly broken (one with a decent-sized hole and two with little cracks). I assume the bird's eggs will get larger and darker as laying progresses, but I'm worried that the cracked eggs are a sign that I might have an egg breaker on my hands. Is this breed prone to egg breaking? The cracks might be a result of the fight that ensues when the Welsummer is trying to lay and the cochin mix is trying to incubate the Welsummer's eggs as they are laid. Those girls really get into it! Hopefully that is the issue and not intentional egg breaking.

Also, this hen is SOOOOO loud. My other chickens (Easter eggers and a cochin mix) don't make nearly as much noise. Is that another characteristic of the breed? I'm starting to worry that my neighbors will complain. Hoping to get some decent eggs from this hen to make amends for the noise.
