The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I have several coops with thier own roos- but now that it's Africa hot I have everybody out during the day. There is always a few scuffles at first until the pecking order is established, then all is fine. My one wellie is now the "head guy". Of any breed I have - I'd prefer to have him in that position because-
1- they are friendly roos
2- they have big combs that get hurt if they aren't #1 guy
3- once they solve territirial issues, the wellies seem to be pretty vigilant about watching the entire grounds, while leaving other roos alone. (unless they get on thier girls, of course)

Okay... I think my willie knows that Louie is the top roo because he runs off even if Louie or Louie's oldest mate looks at him

He is sweet and today was the first time he ever came up to me! lol I didn't get to pet him OR feed him from my hand but at least he came up! Thanks

Don't enclose them in a small area. If you do have to enclose them together, put them in the largest area possible, and put plenty of hide areas and objects that a lower-ranking roo can run around to try to escape. Keep your eye on them and see how it goes.

It's the ranking roo's JOB to bully the others, or he loses his spot. If he's gentle and they don't contest his dominance, might work out okay.

Any shift in the dynamics (new birds, higher-ranking roos getting sick, injured or old, etc. will cause fights until dominance hierarchy is reestablished.

Hens do this too, but not usually as noticeable.

okay. I'm pretty sure my coop is big enough

They come in and out of the coop whenever they want and they all sleep in there together because they WANT to. I don't close them in there at night bit just let them go in there on their own. No challenges yet except one. Syrup (my welsummer) started to fight with Flower (I am starting to wonder if she is a rooster now). It was settled quickly and no one was hurt but that is it so far

Thanks for all of the advice

ok mr roy emailed me back
he is a BYC member"rnau" in alabama.
my roos' daddy came from gabbard farms and the hens were either barber or channing gresham lines.i think it was a good cross whichever line was the mother.

Here is an updated photo of Loki. I thought that he may end up with the wrong colored saddle feathers but they are starting to change to the proper color. I'm so excited about him and can't wait to test him out.

Morning!!!!

Loki is going to be 5 mos old on August 4th. I think I misquoted his age earlier in this thread when I posted that he had just started crowing and commented on how young he was to have started crowing (read the wrong day on the calendar.....sorry!) His personality is great but I wish he was a little more friendly like his dad Odin.

Well since he is so young who knows ? I thought that he was older for some reason. Anyway you are looking for his sire talents primarily so ......?
Someday, you will have the almost perfect Welsummer daddy.
