The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I had 2 roos and 2 hens + 2 EE hens all together this past year. They did fine once the roos established who was dominant. No fights or anything. Might not always work that way, but if they grow up togther it seems to be easier.
I would not take 2 full grown roos and just suddenly throw them together with a couple hens though- someone is bound to get tore up.

You can do those things:

one roo for those three hens
OR
both roos in a bachelor pen with NO hens in it.

With one roo and one hen, she would be wore out from overbreeding from the roo.

Having three girls with one boy, they will be fine and you can get more girls for him later on to spread the "love" around.

I like the dark eggs as well, but I have to keep some spotted eggs in the flock(i really like the dark eggs with big spots). 90% of my hens lay a SOLID egg. When selecting my roosters for future breedings, I only keep them from the darkest solid eggs, I have so many banded birds running around as I keep 3 eggs that I like from each hatch of about 25-30 eggs.

Alot of interest has risen lately about the welsummer LF that I have, so I have decided to keep hatching until mid-late september. Plus I want to hatch out plenty for myself so I can do some picking and choosing on who I want to add to the breeding pen for 2011. I also got some more eggs from one of the breeders that I got some of my chicks from last year, they are really nice eggs!!! more eggs coming this week.

Ill have to post up some pics of the new coops that I built while my grandpa was in the hospital, I really like them, one side has adults the other chicks, it works out really well, but next year I think I am going to use them just for the chicks, as I am planning on building some more breeder coops, and then rotate which breeders will have access to their huge pen with grass and a pond(100 x 100 pen)

Thats great Nate, I love the solid colored ones....crossing with one of my hens who also lays a solid colored egg, would give me all the solid colored layers I could want! I know it is a 50/50 in what I will get but in this case, I take anything!

I guess you just need to find something that works for you....do you take all 4 breeds to the fair or do you just hatch out certain ones? If you only do a couple of them you might find it easier to leave your set up as is and build yourself a small breeding pen on the side that you can put which ever breed into that you would like eggs from.

Newbie here again. think I'm leaning towards putting the two roosters together in a bachelor coop. Would 2 roos get along OK together since they won't be with any hens?

It is week 7 now; here are this week's pix of the girls. Sad, but I obviously have nothing better to do on a Friday night....*sigh
