The Welsummer Thread!!!!

The roo has nice type, coloring is a bit dark but it might come in better as he gets a little older. He is pretty young yet. Oh, he has one more point on his comb than most people like (nitpicking here). Overall, looks like he will make a good breeder.

The hens look like they have nice color, can't tell much else from the pic except that they are still pretty young. To me it appears you are still a good month away from eggs. Whether you have a slow maturing line or they are younger than the seller said is hard to say. I hatched a really pretty girl who is 7.5 months now and still not looking close to laying.

Thanks Lenster. A question...I have been feeding layer crumbles. Would I be better off to still be on grower?
Thanks,
Anne

Southpaw..........I just reread my message. If it came off as harsh, I certainly didn't intend it to sound that way. It was early in the morning, guess I needed more coffee before posting. I think your guy will be a nice breeder for you.

Happy Chooks, please, no worries. I had to go back and look again at your reply to see why you thought it may have seemed harsh. I did not think it was on first read, nor do I think so now. I do appreciate all the feedback and as I said in my post...I really want to know what others think. Any honest answer is fine. (Just so you, and others know, I am a gray haired -prematurely gray, grandma type and a nurse to boot. I have traveled most of this coutry and raised three kids, many dogs, a pig, some horses and chickens. I probably should try raising ducks because like them, stuff rolls off my back pretty easily.) But truly, nothing in your post came across as harsh to me.
Thanks for the reply and the concern. But no sweat, okay!!

So, let me ask you - - - Just how noisy are your welsummers during the egg laying process ??

Mine have just started laying ( about 30 days ago). They are so LOUD. They march up and down fussing LOUDLY at any other hen who in the coop while they are wanting to lay. I don't know what they say in chicken speak to my leghorns, but they REALLY make my leghorns SCREAM. The leghorns have been laying for over 6 months and have always been nice quite layers. HOWEVER, that is not true anymore when the WELSUMMERS are around !

Math~

It's one of the things I love most about them....the beautiful egg songs they sing for me, once one of my gals starts up, the roosters start up, then the rest of the gals start up, then the other coops start up. It's an egg song medley around here.
