The Welsummer Thread!!!!

It would be helpful to have a picture of the them standing on flat ground but from what I can see they are very nice.

Anyone local to me, MS, has your Wellie layed off on laying eggs? We put a light up so they will have more daylight. I put Kellogg, the rooster, back in the coop with the hens last week and thought maybe that is why she stopped laying. We found and killed a chicken snake yesterday that was between 5 1/2 feet and 6 feet long.

So, I just knew today I would have an egg. Nope, not one out there.

She only lays every other day and today should have been that day. Every now and then, she will skip another day. Maybe she did that. Any suggestions?

Hi Pinkchick those are some great looking eggs.
I was hoping to see some on here. I have ten hens laying now and will have 40
more laying by Dec. My eggs look just like yours and are what I consider a large grade egg.
I have started a hatchery in Idaho I have 11 breeds of Layers and 8 breeds of turkeys.

The Welsummers and the BCM and Delawares are my favorite breeds. I am working hard to
breed and hatch to the standards to the best of my ability. Here are some pics of my Welsummers,
BLM, And some Dark Cornish and Lace Cornish. I will post more pics as I get them and keep you
informed on the hatchery Progress. Thank you John
Sorry my spelling is not the best. Math is great but spelling not so good. LOL

I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum!

Has anyone been very happy with their Welsummer egg color when ordering sexed day old chicks from a Hatchery? If so, could you please post the name of the Hatchery?

I know the best way to get healthy chicks and great egg color is to buy chicks or hatching eggs from a Breeder. But, I can't have roosters here, and all my chickens have had the marek vac, which seems to be harder to find in day old chicks from a breeder.

I just wanted to see if anyone knew of a hatchery that had Welsummer's with good egg color.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Well from a hatchery, you would either get disappointed or lucky.

I am sure there are a few in here that would ship you some girls, started birds. Be prepared to pay a bit more.

If you insist on hatchery, the closest I can come up with is Estes Hatchery but be prepared to get disappointed if the egg color isn't what you wanted. However their stock came from the Calicowoods which I do have a hen from that line before the owner passed away and Estes bought his Welsummer flock out.

As for the others, I can not vouch for them or the color of the eggs from their birds.

Ok, so I'm going to be disappointed if I order from a hatchery

My chickens have all had the marek vac, do I need to worry about buying chickens that haven't had it? I'm just a little paranoid about diseases.

Can you recommend a breeder (NPIP) who will sell quailty Welsummers? They don't have to be laying age, just sure they are girls.

Thanks!

It is easier to determine sex in the Welsummer newborn chick than most other birds because partridge birds (type) have very distinctive markings. Check out Nate as in above listing. Most folks here are very pleased with his birds. As far as the vaccine, you will need to ask him that question. I have not ordered from him but like I said most appreciate his birds and he may just have a few left. Most breeders are hunkering down for the COLD. Mary
