The Welsummer Thread!!!!

WELCOME!!!!!

I have never had the pleasure of a Wellie that has gone broody, but some folks that hatched out some eggs from me had 4 of their Wellie girls go broody this summer. They actually called and asked me if I wanted them because they were not happy that they went broody(they raise birds for meat and eggs only and stated that a broody is a waste of time as far as they were concerned). They told me that they were broody almost all summer so they finally let them sit on some eggs, to my disappointment they informed me that they did not make good mothers and they ended up taking the chicks away from them and brooding the chicks themselves.
Hopefully more can chime in with their experiences as I know that several have had broody Wellies.

Thank you for passing that on to me now I know to watch for the non mothering I figured as much because of being listed a s a NON-setter but I wasn't sure so far she is being a good mom but the chicks aren't here yet, I do know that when a hen goes broody unless she sets she will remain broody or keep going broody till she gets to set

Good luck to you I will keep you posted on her mothering skills once the eggs hatch....

Depends on the Wellie... but most of them are not the best mothers, they will usually hatch the chicks, get off to eat, etc, bring the chicks back with them, and go back to sitting again. So. they are great sitters! But not so great of mothers. That is my opinion of them.

On the other hand, the WELSUMMER BANTAMS are the best sitters and mothers anywhere. I usually have some extra bantam hens running around that are not SQ, and use them just as broody hens! They are wonderful, but they are VERY HARD TO BREAK OF BROODYNESS, so are the LF welsummers, once they are broody, they want to incubate.

I had one bantam going broody but wont mother the chicks I put under her. She will just sit but nothing else. Her full sister isn't broody at all.

Nate, if your banty girls would go broody and be a good mother to them, I shall be blessed!

Pinkchick and Royce, I could imagine the expensive cost of NPIP. I was going to have one coming but he refused to give me a price until he gets there and what if it was over hundred of dollars that I don't have? I do not like surprises. NPIP isn't NAIS but somehow they cross over at one point to another.

If you ship your birds, the PO does not care, period as long the bird gets there in good condition. When I had birds shipped out of OR, it was only 18 hours on the plane and trucked the way down from Peoria or Springfield to Decatur. It is THAT fast! I would not hesitate getting birds from Royce or yours Pinkchick even you don't have NPIP papers. It would be too hard to have all that manpower to sort thru all the packages to see if they have necessary paperwork. Exporting any eggs or chickens, oh sure, it has to be done! Everything is inspected across the border.

I am new to Wellies. My 4 that I hatched from breeders here have been laying for about a month. One seems to be laying a VERY dark egg. As dark as or darker than my BCM. Do Welsummer eggs have the dark top layer like BCMs or do they not?

Is this likely or should I be seperating them out to see who is really laying what? Right now I have a a few breeds together for Winter. But the Wellies are the only new layers.

Sorry - again I am new to the Dark layer breeds. Thank you for your input.

Hi Ace! Good to see ya!

Welsummers paint on the color just like the Marans and it can be washed off too. Egg coatings and shades can vary from bird to bird as well as fluctuate during lay cycle.

Congrats on your new layers!

I have Barnevelders who are just starting to lay 2 out of 7.

Wellies (layed early) 4 for 4!

Marans just starting 3 out of 7.

It is like easter everyday in my egg basket and Christmas on the days when some one new lays
