I would say the same about the female. Keep her for awhile. Overall, I'd say she's turning out nicely. I think her hackle color is a little too yellow or golden but that's hard to say for sure because pics can be deceiving.

I didnt think the males would change a whole lot at maturity from a youngster.

I thought it would have been the round two for plumage colors, if he had too much black into it, it might bleed on thru his adult feathers.

I do like his "personality" shining thru the pictures, he does not seem to have a "mean" streak about himself. Very pleasant! he certainly going to have a WIDE chest if he is that young of a bird.

Can you take more pictures of him when he is fully matured? I wanted some "proof" that I am wrong about him!

They will defiantly be around for a while. They do have very sweet personalities.

The little guy needs to fill out quite a bit before he'd be table ready so I'll re post him in another month or two for reconsideration. The shafting is the first thing that hit me about him, I knew that was really wrong. I'll hope for improvement. He's crowing quietly at the moment so I hope he stays quiet. lol The hen won't be going anywhere, I can't wait to see those eggs.

These were 'pot luck' chicks my friend got to pop under her broody who was sadly killed by a dog. She knew I wanted chickens so gifted them to me.

My RIR pullet is looking a bit like that too though not so extreme. Since neither has a matching partner they just might get to make little x-bred meaties. I promised DH table birds in exchange for letting me keep roos.

Out of interest, is that what's called split breast? I've heard of that but not seen it and haven't been able to find a good pic/explanation.

That's interesting PinkCkick, I thought he was missing a few feathers, looks like he's probably started that mini moult. Can't wait to see what he's like in a month or two.

The funniest thing happened this morning...

Last night we got home from shopping (Christmas madness and all lol) to find strong winds had dropped a branch on the pen roof and damaged it. Unable to fix it last night before dark the chickies spent the night back in the laundry in the big dog crate.

Woke up this morning thinking "What IS that??? Loopy radio alarm in the kitchen? Nope. Phone in need of charge? Nope. Any alarm I can think of? Nope. Hu???" Finally woke up enough to realize...
It's the little Wellie Roo!!!

Little guy doesn't sound real. DH slept through the whole thing, got to love a quiet roo!

I have great news about my little roo, DH likes him! He says he likes him 'Because he's the only one who looks like a real rooster'.

Since it now seems he will be staying with us the pair have been dubbed Kellogg's and Special K.

Good Morning my Wellie lovin' Friends!!!

Odin is nearing the end of his 1st heavy full molt, man he looked pretty bad for a while, I was beginning to think he would never snap out of it. He just turned 1.5 years old, I noticed that the fluff at the tail base has gone. I picked him up and seperated the feathers to see if it wasn't just hiding underneath his feathers....no trace of it, no new barbs. Does this mean that it may not return? I haven't noticed that before...the other roosters that I have grown out to this age or older didn't lose their fluff.
