So if how is it handled if a bird can straighten the tail out but let's it go to one side or the other from time to time?

if the bird can not carry its tail in a straight manner, while standing or walking, not climbing or scratching at dirt, it is most likely it could be wry tail.

Here is the illustration of a wry tail , split tail...excellent!

Wry tail is recessive, not dominant however it would be adviseable not to breed the hens or roo with that trait. However it does NOT affect their laying abilities.

Great info, thanks! I bookmarked it!

Can anyone help with names for the newer girls? I am trying to name them for the seasons, like the Welsummer name

Already got Summer, for my four year old hen.

DD suggested "Fall" for one of the pullets.

Had Spring, but she passed away earlier last year.

Maybe another one Spring Two? Spring II?

No one was born in the Winter, so Winter is out.

My hobby name is "Last of the Welsummer Wine".

My girl's legs were yellow too, and now they appear white. (she's molting now)

I never can understand why they do that. I've had other Welsummers from different lines, they all do that after they started laying. All the legs were very pale yellow or white.

It has to do with the yellow in the yolk. At least that is my understanding of it. Supposedly you could even age a chicken based on the lack of yellow. My poor hens are so old (over 5 yrs) that their legs are white.
