The Welsummer Thread!!!!

No hurry here, been busy here too!

Pinkchick! when you are done with the incubator, ship it to me LOL! Oh my hubby won't like that LOL!

Been making plans with Nate for my daughter's school, there will be an auction to support the school and help out the tution and the upkeep $$$$ for the school. They made a list of all the auction ideas and I thought under the "basket" section (food, soaps, bath treatments, etc.) and I thought why not get something for kids (and parents LOL), a basket of Backyard Chicken basket! I will buy the basket, fake grass, a new "Backyard Chickens for Dummies" book, a chick waterer, chick feeder, a five lb bag of chick feed and put in a gift certificate from Nate for 15 chicks to the lucky bidder!

THANK YOU NATE for your kindness of donating chicks for this auction! The person who is doing the auction thing for the school, her daughters are into 4H for chickens and horses and she will tell the others about this "special package". YOU ROCK!

If there are other things I can get from the feed store to add into the basket, let me know!!!!!!!

When I get things together I will take some pictures and get some feedbacks from the public.

Hogback, Welcome to this forum! Cochin378, you wont regret getting some Welsummers, they are better egg layers than Marans, even the breeders are working on getting the production going in their flock. Whitmore Farms are good but from what I have been hearing lately, their eggs are a bit smaller than large eggs but the color is the same as terra cotta and it can vary from bird to bird, whether they will have speckles or not.

I have heard the same thing - I think my eggs are pretty big! They are bigger than my Sussex, and the same size as the marans. So I think they are a LARGE/X-LARGE!

YOU ARE VERY WELCOME ON DONATING SOME CHICKS!!! I DO WHAT I CAN!!! IT WILL HELP GET THE BREED AT SHOWS AND PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THEM! I WILL GET A GIFT CERTIFICATE OUT TO YOU AS SOON AS I CAN. ALONG WITH A FLYER, OTHER PROMO STUFF FOR MY FARM, and some BUSINESS CARDS!

Nate

That's a really neat idea EweSheep and Nate

, keep us posted on how it goes. What a heat lamp and bulb and maybe a rubbermaid tub instead of a basket so that whoever wins it would be all set with a brooder for the chicks?

That is ONE spoiled rooster!

I know! She ended up keeing just a pair of what hatched, and they are both great looking birds - she selected the right ones, and doesent know anything about welsummers except for that I gave her a dozen eggs for her broody!

Hi Nate. I will find a way to make this work! I posted on the Colorado thread too, and already have some interest in splitting an order. I posted a link to your website, and the Colorado folks are drooling over your ducks, too! Expect to get an order from me soon!

Hi to pinkchick, Hens & Roos, and EweSheep. Thanks for the welcome! I spent several evenings reading this whole thread, getting more and more attached to Welsummers. I love the photos. I feel like I know you guys and your birds!

I just got back from Habitat Restore with some building materials for my planned coop. BYC is great - so much information. I have changed my coop plans about a dozen times, because I keep finding a new touch I just have to add. I have big plans for my coop, but need to get it up and running before any little chicks will be coming my way. I will post some photos once I have some babies to show off - but for now, I am going to lurk and learn.

Thanks!

-Jamie

if you want a quality incubator for a great price, I HIGHLY reccomend DICKEYS!!! That is all that I use, and have 90-100% hatches - my bantams are always 95-100% hatch!!!

Which ducks are they drooling over? I dont have a whole ton of breeding stock of ducks, I buy the waterfowl locally from a breeder, and I always hand pick out the best of the best! He has some great stock, Im picky with what I buy! Robin also knows this guy, he is a very reputable breeder, but he prefers not to ship! :)

We are doing what we can as President and Vice President to help promote the breed!!! Still working on the YOUTH/4-H contest for another $75 or $100 Gift Certificate for WELSUMMER LARGEFOWL! If anyone has any ideas for this please email me at [email protected] - or you can email it to robin! We were thinking Essay? Any other ideas or rules/criteria would be great to hear from other welsummer breeders. Shoot me an email, and I would love to hear what you have to say about it!!!

This is such a wonderful thread and GROUP(WCNA). Some of the other threads I also belong to are pretty quiet(other breeds I raise).

I also want to thank:
1. ROBIN - she has been a great president for the WCNA, and keeping it alive, with newsletters, etc. If anyone would like to be featured in the breeders corner email one of us.
2. ANDRE- for giving me the oprotunity to get such high quality welsummer bantams, and be one of his exclusive breeders to get the new blood!!!
3. Everyone else in the Club/This thread for helping the newbies out!

Nate

I think it would be BETTER to get a rubbermaid tote, that way when they are done with their baby chicks, they can wash it all up and store it away for the next batch of chicks! Better than a basket which it is purely for decoration. Thanks for that idea!!!!!!!!!!!

Well NOT all the thanks can go to me, Royce VanBlaricome was the one that MOTIVATE me to get going on the club. After a few starts and sputters, we managed to get it going for two years now. It is still early in its infancy but with BYC's help we can promote, encourage and show our Welsummers, regardless of what our intentions are. More often than not, we even get people who ARE interested but don't have birds yet but will get some Welsummers. Many of them are not breeders, just regular chicken folks that simply want the BEST Welsummer we can get and can afford and not be disappointed in the breed, depending where we got our birds from. That is why I always stress the importance to ASK alot of questions, no matter how small or frival it sounds, ASK! Then after you feel like you have glean all the information you can get, you can then make your own decision in getting your Welsummer OR find another breed that suits YOUR needs and YOUR wants. Sure we all have favorite breeds if we have more than one breed in our backyard but we do have our favorites!

Essays sounds good, most of the kids do know how to write essays. Age group, we gotta figure this one out because not all clubs are created equally...usually the eight to 12 year olds can write essays but we can do that with the eight to 12th graders and pick those out that impresses you.

What are they planning to do with them? Are you going to show them? Or are they going for the egg show? (oh yeah, I love looking at those eggs at the 4H show, all the pretty colors, wide assortment and colors of eggs! How neat!) If you decide to put them up for auction in the 4H or decide to sell them, what are you planning on doing with the funds? (most of them do go to college funds, they are pretty good on that!).

Why are those birds important to you? Explain why.

Updates of the chicks, shows and so forth, it would be wonderful!!!!!!! It will be posted on the WCNA AND BYC, we will make sure of that.

Sounds like you have a really good plan going here, it's always nice to see kids interested in something other than TV and video games

Glad to help with ideas, after working with foster dogs for 3 years now, I like to make things as cleanable as possible, everyone stays healthier that way.
