I don't mind a white bird (fully covered run in the city) ...as long as the eggs are cool and the birds are easily identifiable. I would try a white wellie. I don't have a rooster (and don't want one) so it's all about the eggs. AND I gotta say...I love the speckles!

We set our 3rd group of eggs yesterday, this group mainly Welsummers, Wheaten Ameraucanas, and Partridge Bantam Cochins- these are still our "test" hatches. Our birds are still mostly under a year of age so things are still being figured out. I will try and get a better picture of the Welsummer and post it-hopefully later today.

I have a welsummer question. I have been reading up on them and I hear conflicting things. Do they go broody often? I am a small backyard flock owner and would like a dark egg for fun but I really don't want to deal with broodiness. Maybe I am worried for nothing because a friend had a welsummer go broody and she said it was for almost 3 months and it was awful. I would most likely be getting mine from a hatchery an hour away and they say they go broody occasionally. They classify broodiness by not at all, infrequently, occasionally and yes they are - in that order.

Hi catterbug! Welcome to the Welsummer thread!

Welsummers are not known to go broody, but on occassion someone is lucky enough to experience it. I have heard that they tend to not make good mothers, but then again, some have said that their broody Wellies did make good mothers. I think it really all boils down to the individual bird, no matter the breed, even in breeds that are known for their broodiness, mothering abilities and frequency, gets birds that do just the opposite and never go broody and do not make good mothers.
I have never had a Welsummer hen go broody or even try....but a couple who bought hatching eggs from me had 4 of the pullets they hatched out lay a few eggs then go broody, they were not amused to say the least as they purchased these birds because they are not prone to going broody. They also said that the girls were so determined that the only thing to do was let them sit it out and hatch chicks. Last report was that they raised the chicks just fine until about 3 weeks then lost interest, so the couple ended up brooding the chicks until they were old enough to go outside. They also sold the 4 hens that went broody.
