The Welsummer Thread!!!!

the one on the right is better than the one on the left, because of the white tail fluff and the one on the right is gray tail fluff. Close up pics would do because the pic is far away and a bit grainy. I like the body structure of the right roo too!

Java girl, you have been posting all over the Welsummer websites about your question and I think you are running out of options right now.

Like I said, get a hold of Mark Montgomery for a Gold duckwing or Silver Duckwing bantam roo and cross them with your Wellie LF girls. You would have to cull HARD that are bantam size, partridge size and egg color.

In the UK, the Gold and Silver Duckwings are not well received or widely acceptable. The Dutch does NOT accept them either and I don't think the Germans do either. The UK are having problems with the dispute of the Duckwings, getting egg color established, etc.

I will say it again, there are NO Duckwing Welsummers in the USA. Maybe in Canada if someone got some imports but you would have to deal with all the red tape and all that government papers and you better have a lot of money to deal with these kind of birds importing into US.

So if you want to create some Gold or Silver Duckwing, and you have the movation, time and money and do some HARD culling, it is doable. Otherwise, you will have to import some or call Greenfire Farms on the importation deal and see if they can import some for you. Mind you, it is very very expensive, roughly $1,000 per bird and money would be lost if you lose that bird. I would say you may have to go into five to ten generation to get some consisency without getting any throwbacks in partridge size or bantam size. It is recommended that you do not cross with an OE....those traits would be much harder and much longer to weed and cull out and getting the Welsummer traits back into the Duckwing project.

Would it be widely acceptable in the USA? Probably not. After all, we want to preserve the breed and the original color and the egg shell color as well as the functionality of the Welsummer.

I hope it answers your questions and good luck!

Hey, you can't blame a girl for trying

Got a hold of Mark and this is his response:

I would only sell trios for $200. I sell my hens for $10 as good bantam brown eggers. If they get hens and then come back through the back door and want a roo, that's $180.

I know he is expensive but so well worth it! I had a bantam roo from him and he was very very nice!

Thanks Robin...the one on the right is actually my favorite too. I will get some better photos of him and the other one for you. Both have nice combs which is a breath of fresh air. The roo on the right is going to be VERY LARGE.
Also, I'll have to get a photo of the one and only girl that I have grown out for the year. She is a product of my #18 and Odin. I have been in love with her since she hatched...she is very co-dependent, much friendlier than any other Wellie that I have had. How could I have not kept her?

Maybe if rsquared and another one of my Marans Wellie friends doesn't take all the girls from this up coming hatch I might keep a couple more pullets....but I am swamped out of room right now for more chickens. I seriously need to finish the Delaware coop and finish building the 10" x 20" building that we started laying out and putting a foundation in for last fall. That building will house a butchering station and a cockerel grow out pen at the other end. Can't wait to get that one done.

If you have extra keep me in mind, should be moved in by mid-June. Am selling the bulk of the wellies I have here. Would be happy to do the drive and kinda take things in in the PNW

Will do my friend! Just let me know how many your are thinking of and I will keep you posted on the hatch. Keep your fingers crossed for lots of pullets.

I will be in Newberg for parents day at George Fox University on June 18th if that might work for you.....way less of a drive and the babies would be a couple weeks old which would make for traveling alot easier. I think that I am going to be meeting Zanna there as well that day. She will be in touch with me to let me know if that day works for her...I will keep you informed too.
